Raymond Poland Obituary

Raymond G. Poland 1930 - 2016
HOLLAND PATENT- Raymond G. Poland, 86, of Route 365, passed away in Utica, New York, surrounded by his family, on October 4, 2016.
He was born on March 24, 1930, in Lineville, Iowa, to Laures and Ruby Hamilton Poland. On May 12, 1951, he married the love of his life, Shirley M. Snyder, in Ravanna, Missouri.
After his service in the Air Force, he and his family settled in Holland Patent, where he worked as an electrical engineer at Univac and MDS. Ray had the ability to fix almost anything. His favorite statement was "if man made it, man could fix it". For over 55 years, Ray was a member of Holland Patent's volunteer fire company. For many years, he worked with the New York State Volunteer Firematics Association, where he served on the Timing Equipment Committee. He proudly supported the American Legion Leon R. Roberts Post 161, in Holland Patent, for almost 50 years.
He is survived by his son, Roger (Penny) Poland, Holland Patent; his daughters, Janet Poland, Springfield, New Jersey, and Donna (Jim) Mills, Barneveld; and his sister, Delores Clark, Mercer, Missouri. He also leaves eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to visitation at Mills Funeral Home, 301 Post Street, Boonville, on Sunday, October 9, 2016, from 3-7 p.m. The Holland Patent Hose Company will conduct their service at 7:00 p.m. Mr. Poland's funeral will commence at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 10th, at Stittville United Methodist Church, Stittville, where he has been a member since 1959. Burial will be in Holland Patent Cemetery directly after the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ray's memory to Stittville United Methodist Church or Holland Patent Hose Company.

Ray and I had many things in common. We would work together building or fixing things.we were both members of the Holland Patent Hose company and when I moved to California in 1965 he kept me informed on all the happenings both in the Fire company and our friends. He often said that I was a brother that he never had and I felt the same way about him.Over the past 40 years we have visited each other many times and kept in touch by phone on a monthly basis. My family and I are very saddened by his passing and are going to miss him greatly.

Our family was so fortunate to have Ray as our neighbor and friend. He was one of the nicest and most helpful person we have ever known. Ray's presence will truly be missed by many. Our sincere sympathy goes out to Ray's entire family. Love, the DeMarco Family
