Robert Scully Obituary

Robert E. Scully, Sr.
North Utica
Mr. Robert E. Scully, Sr., of North Utica, entered into eternal rest on September 3, 2012, in the comfort of his home. Bob was born in Utica, NY, on December 19, 1938, the son of Edward J. and Christina Fitzgerald Scully. In 1958, Bob graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School. From 1958 to 1962, Bob proudly served his country in the United States Army, being stationed in Washington, DC, as well as Orleans, France. He continued his career of service when, in 1963, he joined the Utica Police Department. During his career, Bob worked in the Juvenile Aid Division, Criminal Investigations Division and was a member of the State Organized Crime Task Force. After 34 years, Bob retired as a Detective in the Criminal Investigations Division, a title he held proudly. Bob was not only gratified by his years with the department, but also with the friendships he made throughout the years which continue to today. On Friday, May 13, 1962, in St Francis de Sales Church, Bob married Mary Elizabeth Ferriter. They shared a blessed and strong union for a loving marriage of 52 years. In December of 1966, Bob and Mary welcomed Robert E. Scully, Jr. (Robby), as the first of their three children. Robby later honored his father's legacy by joining the Utica Police Department, where he is currently employed as a Sergeant, an accomplishment which made Bob very proud. Robby married Tricia Nicholson and Bob later became "Bumpa" to their two daughters, Miss Annalyse Mary Scully and Miss Abaigeal Margaret Scully. In August of 1969, Bob and Mary were blessed with a baby girl, Elizabeth Scully (Lisa). Lisa became a Certified Public Accountant. Lisa married Samuel Michael Geddes, Jr., and they have two children. Miss Christina Elizabeth Geddes, who was Bob and Mary's first granddaughter, and also gave them a grandson, Master Michael Scully Geddes. In February of 1978, Bob and Mary welcomed their second son, Patrick Ferriter Scully. Patrick would go on to become an Attorney. In July of 2011, Patrick married Catrina Wilson, and they currently reside in Rome, NY. Bob was exceptionally proud of his children; if you knew Bob then you knew of his Robby, Lisa and Patrick. His unconditional love for them has been rewarded in the past months with their constant care for him, providing him with much comfort. It has been a rough journey, but the love they learned throughout their lives allowed them to make it through with an even stronger bond. Bob also leaves a sister and brother-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Arthur (Jeannie) Kramer of Dewitt, NY. One brother-in-law, Mr. Peter Ferriter and his life-long companion, Sharon Hazzard of Remsen, NY. A sister-in-law and her husband, Mr. & Mrs. Anselmo (Debbie) Medici of Palm Beach, FL, and sister-in-law, Mrs. John (Sue) Ferriter. In addition, he is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins and his step-granddaughter, Samantha Geddes. He was predeceased by his parents, his in-laws, John F. and Margaret Ferriter, and one brother-in-law, John R. Ferriter. Bob enjoyed his snow free winters in Port Orange, FL, and his lunches with 'the gang' - Bobby Flo, Guy Fraccola, Buddy Maunz and Nicky Perotta. They loved sharing old UPD stories and memories. Bob was predeceased by his patrol partner and good friend, Howard (Howie) Halpin; the two of them are now sharing the stories which were better left unspoken. Bob and Mary were parishioners of St. Mark's Church in North Utica. Bob was a devout Catholic and his faith was integral in life. Calling hours are Friday from 4-8 p.m. at Nunn & McGrath Funeral Directors, 470 French Rd., Utica. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. from St. Mark's Catholic Church, Keyes Road, North Utica, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place graveside at Calvary Cemetery. The family would like to thank Dr. William Ryan for being more than just Bob's doctor; he was also a good friend. Along with special thanks to the Special Care Unit (4C) at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center for the care and compassion they showed to Bob and to his family. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, please consider donations to St. Mark's Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. messages of sympathy at www.nunnandmcgrath.com

The loss of a father is always a difficult thing. I went to school with Elizabeth (Scully) Geddes since First Grade at General Herkimer, and Elizabeth and my aunt have worked together for a number of years. My own father passed away suddenly in July of 2011. You have my sincerest condolences on your loss.
