Mr. Stephen "Steve" Ivan East Herkimer
Mr. Stephen Steve Ivan, 96, formerly of 201 Main Road, East Herkimer, passed away on Tuesday morning, October 20, 2009, with his family at his side. Steve was born on October 6, 1913, in Little Falls, the son of the late Andrew and Elizabeth (Dudick) Ivan, and attended Van Hornesville and Little Falls schools. On August 31, 1940, he was united in marriage with Alice Follmer in the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Little Falls; a union of 69 years. Steve was once employed by Snyder Manufacturing Plant. He worked for Remington Arms Company, Inc., of Ilion, retiring in 1978 with 36 years of dedicated service. Mr. Ivan was a member of the East Herkimer Volunteer Fire Department (58 years of continuous active service), line officer for 17 years with 5 years as chief; member of the East Herkimer Exempt Firemens Organization for over 40 years, including several terms as president; one of the founders and past president of Herkimer County Fire Chiefs Association; member of the Central New York Firemens Association for 25 years, in which he is a past president; New York State Volunteer Firemens Association for over 45 years; New York State Fire Chiefs Association for over 30 years, chosen to be the Grand Marshall for East Herkimer VFD 75th anniversary celebration in 2006; firefighter of the year for his dedicated service to fire service in Herkimer County"; one of the founders of the Mohawk Valley Ambulance Corps. (MOVAC); 1992 citizen of the year; member of the town of Herkimer Senior Citizens serving four years as president. Survivors include his loving family: his wife, Alice; three daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Richard Holmes of Ames, Janice Merena of Herkimer, and Donna and John Jack Wilcox of Herkimer; six grandchildren, Kyle and Brenda Merena of Ilion, Stephanie and Timothy Wiegand of Las Vegas, Nevada, Kelly Merena of Herkimer, Brianne Wilcox of Herkimer, Ella Wilcox of Herkimer and Kimberly Favreau of Idaho; two great-grandchildren, Allison and Grace Wiegand of Las Vegas, Nevada; two brothers, George Ivan of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Andrew Ivan of Australia; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., between Ilion and Frankfort, 894-8000, will be on Friday, October 23, 2009, from 4-8 p.m. Mr. Ivans funeral will commence at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 24th, from the chapel of the Enea Family Funeral Home, Ilion/Frankfort. Procession will follow to Church St. Cemetery, Little Falls, where he will be laid to rest. Memorial offerings may be made to the East Herkimer Volunteer Fire Department, MOVAC or to the Peter Merena Scholarship Fund; envelopes will be available and donations may be made at the funeral home. The family would like to thank the entire staff at Valley Health Services, Herkimer, for all of their dedication, kindness and compassion during Mr. Ivans stay. Members of the town of Herkimer Senior Citizens are asked to gather at the Enea Family Funeral Home at 4:45 p.m. on Friday to conduct their service. The East Herkimer Volunteer Fire Department and other county fire officials will gather in a body at the funeral home at 6:00 p.m. on Friday to pay their respects.
