Taras Herbowy Obituary
UTICA - Dr. Taras J. Herbowy, 76, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at Rochester General Hospital.
He was born on June 5, 1942, in Utica, a son of the late John and Mary Sawka Herbowy. Taras graduated from Utica Free Academy, received a bachelor's degree from the University of Mississippi and a Doctorate of Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Taras was most proud of his honorary degree from Mohawk Valley Technical Institute (now MVCC), which he attended upon graduation from high school, conferred in 1993. On June 20, 1970, he married Janet Dziezynski at Holy Trinity Church in Utica. Taras had a long career in education, beginning as a business teacher in the Utica City School District serving in many leadership capacities, culminating in the role of Superintendent of Schools. After retiring from Utica, he was the Superintendent of Schools for the East Providence School District in Rhode Island. He most recently served as the Executive Director of the Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Utica. Throughout his career, he worked as an adjunct professor at local colleges and enjoyed tapping his skills as a teacher and counselor as a trusted mentor and friend.
Taras was well known in the community and an active member of various civic and professional organizations. He will be remembered for his vivacious personality, witty sense of humor and deep love for his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janet Herbowy, of Utica; children, Dr. Michael Herbowy and his wife, Dr. Stacey DiMartino, Michelle Herbowy, Larissa Salvato and her husband, Jason and David Herbowy and his wife, Jennifer Long; grandchildren, Michael Herbowy, Jr., Lauren and Jacqueline Salvato; brothers, Nestor Herbowy and his wife, Laureen and Daniel Herbowy and his wife, Bonnie; sister-in-law, Julia Herbowy; and many cherished nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Roger Herbowy.
The family would like to offer their gratitude to the staffs of the Utica Fire Department, Emergency Room at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Mercy Flight Central and Rochester General Hospital for the compassionate care given to Taras.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, at Holy Trinity Church in Utica. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery immediately following the service. Calling hours will be on Thursday, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford.

I thought of Taras and the Herbowy family today, unaware of his passing. My belated, but sincere condolences go out to Taras' many friends and loved ones. Meeting and getting to know Taras, his brothers Dan & Nestor and their wonderful family during my 14 years ('82-96) in the Utica area is one of the many good fortunes and fond memories I often recall to this day. R.I.P. Dr. Herbowy.

Dear Herbowy family
I was so saddened to hear of Dr. Herbowys passing. He was a wonderful man and Administrator.
I worked for the UCSD at Jones school as a teaching assistant for many years and remember all the children when they attended there.
Taras was always very nice to me and very helpful. It was a pleasure to work for him.
He will be missed by many .

My friend, Dan Bielicki, notified me of Taras'passing today. On my trips to Utica over the years, I occasionally would run into him He would always ask about my family and how life was going. Like Nestor, Daniel and Roger, he touched many lives.
We shall miss his humor and benevolent spirit and extend condolences to his family.

I was very sorry to read about Taras's passing. As a neighborhood kid I fondly remember the important role the Herbowy Family played in our little community. And by the way, we all tuned out pretty well.
Taras was a senior member of the team and he always had an interesting perspective. I can tell that didn't change much because he had a lot to give. I wish you all well as you as you create a new normal and may Roger and Taras continue to watch over your family.

I heard yesterday of the passing of Taras. To the family i'm so sorry for your loss.I have known Taras over forty seven years.I will never forget at his brothers viewing the overpowering figure Taras was he leaned over to give me a hug and tears ran down his cheek onto mine and he said Gerald what are we going to do without Roger, i said to believe in God , and now like your brother you are in paradise with him, god rest your soul.God bless you Janet and your family for we lost a great family man and friend.

I had the good fortune of knowing Taras since the eighth grade. He was a great person from a wonderful family. He was also a tireless public servant who brought integrity, brains and compassion to the many years of public service he gave. He was one of the best in our local history and will be missed. Janet my deepest sympathy goes out to you and your entire family. I was on my way to my daughters in Jamestown, NY when I received a call about Taras's passing. Needless to say I was absolutely shocked. I will always remember how fairly he treated me and what a great person he was to work for. Family was always number one. Unfortunately I will be unable to pay my respects since I will be at my daughters, but rest assure you and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
