William J. Madden
Whitesboro
William J. Madden, 86, a lifelong Whitesboro resident passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2013, after a brief illness at Faxton St. Lukes Healthcare with his loving family by his side. He was born in Whitesboro on April 16, 1927, the son of Bernard and Marguerite Tully Madden and graduated from Whitesboro High School, the Utica School of Commerce and the American Institute of Banking. On June 27, 1953 he was united in marriage with Nancy Zientek in Holy Trinity Church, Utica; a loving union shared for 60 years. Bill served proudly with the U.S. Navy during WWII and was on board the FDR Aircraft Carrier during the commissioning of the ship. He was employed with Marine Midland Bank for 36 years until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of American Legion Post 1376 in New Hartford, the New York Mills and Whitestown Seniors and was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and the Skenandoa Club in Clinton. Bill will be remembered as an exercise enthusiast, an avid golfer, a carpenter who built his own home and a traveler who enjoyed his trips with the seniors including those to the Casinos. He especially enjoyed his cross-country trip with Nancy, during which he had the pleasure to play Pebble Beach Golf Club. He also cherished the times spent with his five grandchildren attending their many events and special moments in their lives. His survivors include his beloved wife, Nancy Madden, of Whitesboro; daughters, Susan Fraser and John Tierney, of Whitesboro and Kathy and Stefan Surawski, of Sauquoit; and son, Joseph and Deborah Madden, of Sauquoit. Also included are his five grandchildren, Meghan Fraser, of Utica, Kaitlin Surawski, of Rochester, Joshua Surawski, of Northfield, VT, and Nicholas and Brittany Madden, of Sauquoit. He was predeceased by his daughter, Mary Ann; brothers, John and Richard Madden; and his son-in-law, Peter Fraser. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial which will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, New Hartford with Military Honors. The Family will receive friends at the conclusion of mass. There are no public calling hours. Burial will take place in Mt Olivet Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of the Kowalczyk Funeral Home284 Main Street New York Mills. Nancy and Kathy, so sorry to hear of the earthly departure of your husband and father. May your faith in the gift of eternal life from Jesus bring you comfort in the days ahead. You both always spoke so fondly of him when I worked with you at St Luke's. I am
reminded what a nice family you have year when I put the knitted snowman ornament Nancy made back in the early 80's on my
Christmas tree. Sorry for your loss.
