Gerald Mason Obituary

Gerald L. "Jerry" Mason, born 1946, died March 12, 2021 in Williamsburg, Virginia from complications of COVID-19. Born in Manhattan (Inwood), Jerry grew up between NYC and Farmingdale, NY. He earned a BA from Fordham University, served honorably in the US Army during the Vietnam War, and later received an MBA from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, UK. Over the course of his lifelong foreign service career, Jerry lived and worked in more than ten locations across four continents. A gifted linguist, Jerry would often read foreign language dictionaries front to back, simply for fun. He was a hard-working and absolutely brilliant man who would nevertheless enjoy the silliest, most banal TV shows. Despite a gruff and intimidating exterior, Jerry never failed to show kindness in even the smallest interactions. He never lost his sense of wonder about the world as he moved through it. His sharp mind, integrity, and grace toward others are sorely missed. Survived by wife Kimiko Isobe, children Akira, Mika, and Kenji Mason, son-in-law Travis Hallenbeck, grandchildren Rumiko and Reika, and sister Susan Mason Donovan. He was the son of Gerald V. Mason and Teresa Ann Watkins. In light of pandemic circumstances, there is no public funeral. Jerry will be interred in Calverton National Cemetery in New York. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to ChildFund International, work for peace, and/or enjoy a vanilla milkshake. Bucktrout Funeral Home has assisted with arrangements.

Jerry was the best. A great colleague, friend, and inspiration. I often reminisce about our times/adventures together. My family still recalls him and his family fondly. RIP

I was just a kid when I served with Jerry in Vietnam. I learned so much from him. He gave me books to read that helped shape my life. He enjoyed the Marx Brothers and loved getting letters from his Sister. He had a loyal dog named Peaches in Vietnam. I tried several times to locate him over the years. Rest in peace my Brother. I'll see you soon.

Jerry was one the finest Officers I ever served with. He was friend, a great colleague, and a great human being. Long live his memory!

I had the great pleasure to get to know Jerry in Washington in the 1970s and later that decade when we served together in Japan. His wit, kindness, and humor remain to this day simply unforgettable, as does the friendship he extended then and over the subsequent years when we crossed paths. Jerry was a superb professional colleague and, despite separate paths, someone Toni and I have remembered always as a friend.

Jerry was my boss at a posting in north Africa. He was a wonderful man and I´m sorry to hear of his passing...

One of the kindest, most giving people I ever met. He lent a helping hand to my career at a crucial moment in my life. I am forever grateful to him for that and his friendship. And, yes, I will toast a milkshake to his memory.
