John Probst Obituary

John Probst passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2022 surrounded by family and loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived and will be deeply missed by his sister Laura (Hornef), brother-in-law James and niece Rhea Jane, his sister Lore (Lechler) and nephew Paul (Pool); cousins, George, Robert, James, Andrew, Edward, David, Cathy Jean, Mary Virginia, Suzanne and their families. John was born in Philadelphia on January 25, 1963. He had many hobbies growing up and was an avid skier. John had a B.A in Political Science from Emory University, a JD from Seattle University School of Law, and a certificate in Japanese studies from the East Asia Program at Cornell University. He traveled extensively and enjoyed telling people he had visited all the continents in the world except Antarctica. John was also a member of both the Virginia State Bar and the District of Columbia bar. John volunteered with the Virginia Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program (JLAP) in Richmond, Virginia. John was an extremely dedicated son and brother. He put his own personal goals and aspirations on hold while he helped care for his mother, Jane, who suffered from a long-term illness. He helped his sister, Laura, throughout his life, but most recently being present during his brother-in-law's last deployment to the Middle East. John earned his Master of Science in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University. He spent a significant part of his life in the helping professions. He found his passion in helping others discover and build on their inherent strengths and abilities and to aid them in their mental health challenges. John worked diligently and was proud of his sobriety. He recently celebrated nine years in recovery. He was a blessing to many on their journey towards their own recovery and especially to his sponsees. John credited the Farley Center in Williamsburg with saving his life. He was once a patient there and later returned as a therapist and was instrumental in the life saving recovery of many who struggled with addiction. A memorial service will be conducted at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, Saturday November 26, at 12pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in John's memory to the Farley Center in Williamsburg, Virginia, or Lee's Friends, a local service organization that provides practical support to cancer patients and their families. A guest book may be signed, and condolences may be sent to the family at www.hdoliver.com.
