Maurice D. Porter

JUPITER - Maurice D. "Maury" Porter, age 93, died at home on Saturday, February 13, 2016 after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Born in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, Maury grew up in Maine graduating from South Portland. He had a love for flying and as soon as he was able he joined the Army Air Corp serving as a B-17 pilot. He was shot down over Germany, wounded and finished the war in prison camp. Following the war, he completed his education and went on to become a successful business man serving as Vice President and manager of the Hicks Company manufacturer of guided missiles. In 1963, he built his first Holiday Inn in Hagerstown, Maryland. He joined the association and in 1971-1972 was named International President of the Association of Holiday Inns. He married Joan in 1948 and they spent the next 68 ½ years together. They have two sons John and Robert. Maury and Joan lived in several locations before finally having homes in Tequesta, FL and Williamsburg, VA. Maury loved the Lord and his country. After retirement he spent his life spreading God's word. He was a founding member of the Jupiter First Church. He taught Sunday school and was an active supporter of Campus Crusade for Christ. In his 70's he became involved in the Kairos Prison Ministry and spent the next 20 years taking and spreading the word of Christ to convicted felons in the Virginia prison system. He touched so many men with little hope, showing them a different way of life. They are now spreading the word throughout the prison system. Maury was predeceased by his mother and father Geneva and Lawrence and his two brothers Norman and Glendon. He is survived by his wife Joan of Tequesta, Two sons, John and his wife, Ellen of Chesapeake, Va., and Robert and partner Elena of Virginia Beach, Va. Four grandchildren, Erin Porter of Walkerton, Va., Ashley Adkins and husband Craig of New York, NY, John "JW" of Smithtown,NY , and Bryn Dugre and husband Neal of Houston, TX and three great grandchildren as well as his beloved Jack Russell, Samantha. A memorial Service will be held on February 27, 2016 at 2:00 at Jupiter First Church, 1475 Indian Creek Parkway, Jupiter, FL.
