In her early years her parents farmed until the depression and WWII. The family moved to Ft. Collins, CO and Berkeley, CA to find work. Many summers were spent on her grandparents farm near Hawleyville and her parents returned to farming in 1944. She married Wendell J. Meyer at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarinda on Nov. 23, 1947. She was confirmed and became a member of St. John. Upon Wendell's passing in 1981 she continued to live at the Clarinda farm until moving to the home of Alan and Miriam in Eastern Iowa 16 years ago in 2009. She lived with Alan and Miriam over ten years and moved with them to Wyoming to be closer to family six years ago.
Joyce was dedicated to her family and in the early years was busy on the farm, raising children, gardening, canning, sewing and being active in the community including church and 4-H. The family hosted AFS exchange students from Austria and Sweden. Joyce's quick wit, storytelling, humor, and loving compassion were enjoyed by family, friends, and caretakers alike.
