Marlene Mae (Mitts) Gant, daughter of Byron Frederick Mitts and Inice Mildred (Keeler) Mitts, was born on March 31, 1933, in rural Clarinda, Iowa. She was educated in the Clarinda Community Schools and graduated from the Clarinda High School with the class of 1951. Following her graduation, Marlene worked at Mutual of Omaha for a short time before completing the civil service exam, placing her at the Strategic Air Force Base in Bellevue. Marlene was the secretary to the colonel on the base.
Marlene was united in marriage to Hobert Dean Gant at the Yorktown Methodist Church on April 26, 1953. She was the proud mother of two children, Marisa and Randall. While residing in Page County, Marlene was the assistant to the Page County Attorney. She then followed in her father's Postmaster footsteps and took employment at the Coin Post Office. She was the clerk for eleven years and then was promoted to Postmaster, retiring after eleven years in January of 1998.
Marlene was known by her family and friends as a very gentle and soft-spoken lady. She was one of the most humble, understanding and dependable people you could ever know.
Marlene was a faithful wife to Hobert and served at his side for 71 years. She was not raised on a farm but definitely enjoyed her home on the farm with her flowers and garden. She was like a flower in bloom and also like a fine wine that only got better with age. Though basically quiet and soft-spoken she had a sense of humor that few ever got to enjoy. Because Marlene was somewhat behind-the-scenes-oriented you might think she was a push-over but if necessary she could take charge but always politely. She was a friendly neighbor and enjoyed her local friends. She had a few life-long friendships, one lasting 91 years.
Most importantly, Marlene Gant became a born-again Christian in 1973 at the age of 40, shortly after her daughter Marisa also had turned to Jesus Christ. Along with her husband Hobert, she served in the Methodist Church in Coin for several years. Later they became 20+ year 'founding members' of Lord of Hosts Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Marlene's love for Jesus Christ as her personal savior and Lord was genuine and very real. Marlene was meticulous in everything she did and provided tremendous care for everything she put her hands to. She was absolutely a 'wonderful soul' that will be greatly missed by everyone she touched in life. Her legacy will speak loudly and encourage others to live by her example!
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and daughter-in-law, Rhonda Gant
Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 71 years, Hobert of Coin; daughter Marisa (Frank) Hensley of California, Missouri; son Randall (Denise) Gant of Coin; known as Grandma Marne to six grandchildren, Traci (Seth) Thompson, Joni (Trey) Bailey, Ashley Hensley, Joshua (Nataleigh) Hensley, Nate Gant (Heather) and Lindsay Gant (Vanessa); 13 great-grandchidlren, Caitlyn and Connor Thompson, Jackson Hensley, Eli, Bella and William Bailey, Everleigh and Hawken Hensley, Audra and Elsa Kensel and Lennon, Declan and Finnegan Gant.
