He had been battling cancer for over a year. He always had a positive thing to say about everybody. He could sit down and talk for hours to anyone that seemed interested in the band that he loved with all his heart. His remarkable memory made for some great stories. Dick was born January 24, 1929, the year of the Great Depression in Ottumwa, Iowa. He was involved in having his own bands since the age of 13, sort of a much younger version of Glenn Miller. His last band he had before he was in the Clarinda School system becoming Clarinda's Music Man, was called The Dukes of Rhythm while at Drake University. Dick started the Clarinda Band Jamboree, the Glenn Miller Festival in 1976, Cardinal Capers, the white uniformed front rank of Hand Bells and was head of the Municipal Band at the park for many years. In 1965, his band marched at halftime during the Kansas City Chiefs vs New York Jets with Joe Namath at QB. In his 30's, he enjoyed flying up to solo, with aviation, a passion that he had his whole life. He loved the Lord and would share his faith with many people he met. In his later years he would go to the hospital cafeteria for supper every evening and share his love for the Lord with anyone that seemed interested. In this last year, he would spend every afternoon in the Bible with his friend, Christ, and eagerly anticipated going to Heaven. Left to cherish Dick's memory are his son Steve (Brenda) Mowery of Clarinda; grandson Paul (Sarah) Mowery of Norwalk, Iowa; great grandson Leo Mowery of Norwalk, Iowa; son-in-law Ernie Tomlinson of Clarinda, Iowa; sister-in-law Jude Higday of Ankeny, Iowa; a nephew Rick (Silva) Higday of Houston, Texas; niece Lisa Butler of Carroll, Iowa, and many friends. Preceding Dick in death is his wife, Beverly Mowery; his daughter Kathy Tomlinson; his parents, Emmett and Evelyn (Hutchcroft) Mowery; his in-laws, Lewis and Helen Higday; and his brother-in-law, Dick Higday.
