I think about you every time I go to the doctor and every time I pass the old office. You are missed by many.

Dr. Abraham Cano began helping patients and families at the Rio Grande State MH-MR Center from the time he began practicing medicine in Harlingen. For a number of years, Mrs. Mary Helen Cano also helped many residents and families at the RGSC Developmental Disabilities Inpatient Unit. A number of years later, after the Inpatient Treatment Center opened at Valley Baptist Medical Center, Dr. Cano would often stop by to do a little "catching up". Always friendly and caring for others, he was a joy to visit with. Dr. Cano will long be remembered by those of us fortunate enough to have known him.

I was most saddened to hear of Dr. Cano's passing, Upon my return from San Antonio to the Valley for my Dads funeral, i also had intentions of going to see him at the office once again when I was told the news. I am so glad I had the privelege of being one of his patients, working with him at Valley Baptist Medical Center and also having him as a friend. I enjoyed the 12 1/2 years paging and communicating with him on a day to day bases at the hospital. when I paged him he would always respond promptly and say " Que paso mija?" He always made sure to ask how I was. He gave of himself in the most kind and loving way. The same I have to say that as my Doctor He always so professional and personable. So for a friend he always had a listening ear and a big smile that came with it. I will never forget the day I had my son at VBMC back in 1985 He walked into my room at 6:30 in the morning, I said Dr. Cano good morning what are you doing here so early? He said "I just had to come see you and Congratulate you mija!" So my memories of this great man your father, husband, brother, uncle, grandpa or friend I say I will greatly miss him and his caringloving, sweet way. But i am sure he has just taken a step ahead and we will see him again someday. RIP Dr. A Cano I will always smile and remember you. In my prayers. With Great Love! Sincerley, Your PBX Operator

To Mrs. Cano and the girls, my deepest sympathy to all of you. I still can't believe Dr. Cano has passed on. He was my doctor on & off for many years. I remember driving the patients from Retama to his office; always so kind with the them. He later cared for my grandma not too long ago, who passed in December 2009. He took great care of her, too. He also provided guidance to someone in his medical career. A very selfless man, very helpful. May you know that I feel deeply saddened by your loss.

Mrs. Cano and family,
We just returned to town today and received the sad news of Dr. Cano's passing. Although he was not our doctor, we got to know him because he would often treat my sister who was at Retama Manor. He often covered for Dr. Aguilar and we were very pleased with the care and attention he gave my sister. We know that your pain is deep and your loss, heartbreaking. May God give you the strength to face each day and may you find comfort in family and in the many memories you shared.

August 24, 2010

Dr. Cano will be greatly missed by the staff and residents of Retama Manor. I have never met a doctor with such humility and selfless devotion to his profession as Dr.Cano had. He made caring for our residents so much easier, allowing us to call him directly on countless occasions even when he was not on call and every call was returned. We will miss him in our monthly meetings or seeing him make rounds early in the morning, the last one made with a promise that he will be back in 2-3 weeks. He TRULY CARED. We will always cherish our memories of him in the many years he assisted us as a co-medical and then medical director of our facility. We are forever indebted to him. May the entire CANO family find strength and comfort in the memories they have of this beloved man as we do.

August 24, 2010

Dear Mrs. Cano,
We were so sorry to hear from Rob O'Malley of the passing of Dr. Cano. I was a patient of his and he often referred to me as his "friend from Canada" in his office. He made a visit to the doctor a real pleasure. We often discussed your coming some day to visit Canada.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this very sad time.
Sincerely,

Mrs. Cano, Yvette, Anna, Michelle and Lisa, I want to express my deepest sympathies to you. Dr. Cano was a great doctor and an amazing person that touched the lives of many. I am deeply saddened with his passing but I will always remember him as a gentle person who was always smiling. Do you all remember in 1983 when we packed your Suburban with 18 people and drove to San Antonio to the Folk Life Festival....He was totally relaxed and smiled the entire time with 18 noisy, loud people in his Suburban! What a cool man. I will miss him.
