Emma Barton Trevino, 98, passed away on September 29, 2011 at Knapp Medical Center. She was born on February 20, 1913 in Brownsville, TX,, but lived most of her life in Mercedes, Texas. Emma was the last surviving child of Abilio G. Trevino and Maria Barton Trevino, both descendents of pioneer Spanish settlers of his area.
Emma was also the last surviving grandchild of Elder B. Barton and Santitos Balli Barton. Her grandfather, Elder B. Barton, was a veteran of the Texas War of Independence from Mexico, and is listed as having fought in the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836.
Preceding Emma in death were her siblings Susanita (Eduardo) Longoria, Ester (Roberto) Marroquin, Santitos (Roberto C.) Champion, Arturo B. (Elida) Trevino and Abilio Trevino, Jr. Also preceding her in death were nieces Diana Marroquin, Anita Trevino Sanger and nephew Danny A. Longoria.
Survivors include nieces: Dora Champion (Raul) Gonzalez of Austin, Gloria Champion (Homero) Garcia of Weslaco, Stella Marroquin Oakes of Chamblee, GA, Sarah Trevino (Doug) Anderson of Denver, CO, Livia Anne Trevino (Don) Pequignot, of Los Angeles, CA.

During the last seven years, Emma was a resident of Weslaco Nursing and Rehab, where the staff lovingly cared for her (in spite of her temper tantrums). When they would ask her why she never married, she would respond, ``porque no fui tonta!'
Services will include a rosary at 7:00 PM on Monday, October 3, at Garcia and Tevino Funeral Home in Mercedes. There will also be a mass at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 4, at Our Lady of Mercy Church, followed by interment at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery, also in Mercedes.
