Omar Lucio

1933 - 2022

San Benito, TX - Omar Lucio, age 88, of San Benito, Texas went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 17, 2022. He was born on August 19, 1933 in San Benito, TX to Armando and Porfiria (Pilita) Lucio. Omar was a loving father, family man, and public servant.

Omar was a pillar for the community, but most importantly for his family. Omar is survived by his beautiful wife of 70 years, Nena Lucio, and together they raised five beautiful children: Gracie, Patricia (Rene), Edna (Reagan), Omar Jr., and Sarah (Jose). Omar is laid to rest by his beloved siblings Armando Jr. (Regina), Edelmiro (+Merry), Arminda (+Victor), Odelia (+Jesus), and Alicia (Edelmiro). He is preceded in death by his brother Alberto.

Omar greatly valued education. He modeled this by seeking out as many opportunities to further his education as possible, so that he may better serve others. Omar received his bachelor's degree from Pan American University, double majoring in Sociology and Criminal Justice. He also received his doctorate of Juris Prudence from the Reynaldo Garza School of Law while serving as police captain. Omar graduated from the FBI Academy, where he encouraged others and shared his knowledge and experience. His commitment to helping others extended not only to his co-workers and colleagues, but also the students he taught at the university.

Omar began his law enforcement career as a police officer in the Harlingen Police Department in 1962, and was a loyal public servant for more than 60 years. During his career at the HPD, he climbed the ranks up to Captain of Police. He continued his service and was elected Sheriff of Cameron County in 1997. He also had the opportunity to work with the citizens of Mercedes as Chief of Police. In 2005, he returned as Sheriff of Cameron County where he performed his duties until the end of his illustrious career. "The personality of the Sheriff must be beyond question, reflecting commitment to adherence to the law both professionally and in personal matters."

Omar not only served his community as a beloved and respected lawman, but also as an active citizen. He was a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, a member of both the Texas Sheriff's Association and the National Sheriff's Association. Community service organizations include Harlingen Leadership Class VII, Harlingen Leadership Steering Committee (25 years of service), United Way, and a board member for End of Road Ministry Shelter for the Homeless. The Omar Lucio Field at Victor Park was named in his honor for his years of dedication to the Texas Bronco Youth Baseball League.

Omar was a man of high integrity and great pride. He was extremely proud of our beautiful family, and our lives are all considerably better for having had the privilege to have known him.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm at Trinity Funeral Chapel and will continue at the Harlingen Convention Center, 701 Harlingen Heights Dr., from 6:00 pm with a prayer service of the Holy Rosary to begin at 7:00 pm.

Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, January 20, at 11:00 am at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery in San Benito, Texas.
