Thomas Caruso Obituary

La Feria - Thomas (Tom) Caruso left this earthly life for his Heavenly home on Sunday, February 18, 2018. He was born on March 27, 1919 in Jeanerette, LA. to the late Pasquale Caruso & Francesca Anzalune Caruso. The family moved to Santa Rosa, TX when Tom was 4 years old. He married Ella Mary Henning on February 4, 1941 and they moved to a small place just north of La Feria, TX. All of his life, Tom was a farmer and a rancher. Tom was practicing "green" before green was the thing to do. Tom's method of farming was always "take care of the land and it will always be there to use". Over the years he grew everything in crops from cotton, to corn, and cabbage and tomatoes. His ranching always involved raising Brahmas, Crossbreds, and Beef masters. During his summers, to supplement that farming income, he was often employed as a field man for Traylor Brothers Cotton Gin. He also worked with the La Feria Co-op and served on the La Feria Water Board. He also served 9 years on the Cameron County FHA board.

After the passing of Ella in 1969, he later married Lou Ella Horton. She passed away in 1989. He was preceded in death by his parents, three older sisters, Josie, Rosie and Mary; two older brothers, Charlie and Sam; one younger sister Teresa; one younger brother, Tony and one son William Charles and his two beloved wives.

He is survived by one daughter, Mary Caruso (Russell) Joy; three sons Thomas Robert Caruso, Gregory Lee (Pauline) Caruso, Joseph Duane (Sherrie) Caruso; five grandchildren Reid Joy, Mauri Joy, Jonathon (Heather) Caruso, Danielle (Jessie) Walker, Jacob (Brandy) Caruso, Christopher (Rachel) Caruso; and six great grandchildren, Madelyn, Joel and Joshua Caruso, Aden, Kelly and Eden Caruso.

Visitation will be held in the Rudy Garza Funeral Home Chapel of Palms on Friday, February 23, 2018 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 10:00 am at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with burial to follow at Restlawn Memorial Park. Honored to serve as pallbearers will be his grandchildren: Reid Joy, Mauri Joy, Jonathon Caruso, Danielle Caruso Walker, Jacob Caruso and Christopher Caruso. Honorary pallbearers are all of his friends at La Feria Co-op and a special friend, Robert Leal.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Veranda Rehabilitation Healthcare and the staff at Amara Hospice.

My condolences to the family and friends of Mr.Tom Caruso. I remember him as a very kind, friendly and hard working man devoted to his family, farming and ranching. When you talked about North Rabb Road his name was always a respected part of the conversations. I had the pleasure of going to school with some of his family and his son, Tom, and I graduated the same year. Sorry for your loss. He will be missed by many.

Many years ago I was a young kid and even then, I knew who Thomas Caruso was. I do know that my dad, Felix , had dealings with him, because he was our neighbor. I remember the Carusos used to live in a corner about a stone's throw from Highway 506. When they moved to Rabb Road, every morning the school bus would stop in front of their house to pick up I believe was Thomas Jr. and possibly Mary. Sometime ago, I made it a point to look him up and I did see him and talk to him. We reminisced about the past as I wanted to know what he knew about my dad. I wanted to say this as I feel that a true pioneer has left us but has more certainty left us with an extensive legacy. R.I.P. great man!
