Alice Wentworth Obituary
Alice V. Wentworth, age 95, passed away on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at home in Venice, Florida, where she and her husband, Lowell, lived in retirement for 33 years.
Alice was born and raised in Newtonville, Massachusetts. She attended Newtonville High School, and Smith College in Amherst, Massachusetts where she earned her BA degree in English in 1950. Additional courses in Education led to a teaching certification.
A summer job that year took Alice to the coastal town of Duxbury, Massachusetts, the historic home and burial place of the Plymouth Pilgrims John and Priscilla Alden and Captain Myles Standish. It was there that Alice and travel film cinematographer, Lowell, fell in love, beginning a lifelong romance with a passion for sailing, travel, and family. In 1951 they were married in Newton, Massachusetts, and together they worked, traveled, and developed a wide circle of friends before starting their family in 1954.
Alice raised her family of four in Melrose, Massachusetts where she resided for over 30 years. She was a loving and attentive Mom, always supporting and caring for her family. When her youngest was of school age she returned to teaching and taught first grades in Melrose and Reading, Massachusetts until retiring in 1990.
Alice was an active member of the Melrose Highlands Congregational Church, leading and serving on multiple church boards and social groups. In the summers, she would often sail with Lowell and explore the craggy coast and ports of their beloved Maine. Throughout her life, she had many hobbies that included knitting, piano, reading, and bird-watching. She stayed true to her interest in education and for many years was an active member of the Smith Club.
In 1990, Alice and Lowell retired to Venice, Florida to be close to friends and the warm weather. She became an active member of the Venice United Church of Christ, including starting and leading the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Over time, she served as President of the Women's Fellowship, Co-Chair of the Diaconate, Chair of the Daycare Board, and Chair of the Women's Committee for the renovation and expansion of the church parlor. She was always present and helping out at church functions. She was also a Stephen Minister, a member of the Esther Circle, and a Hospice volunteer. In 2015, Alice was voted Venice UCC's Key Woman for Church Women United.
Alice is survived by Lowell, her loving and devoted husband of 72 years, and four children, Norman R. Wentworth of Amelia Island, Florida, Peter D. Wentworth of Morristown, New Jersey, Robert F. Wentworth of Peachtree City, Georgia, and Carol E. Wentworth of Andover, Massachusetts. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Alice's Life will be held at a later date to be announced. Memorial donations may be sent to: Venice United Church of Christ or to Tidewell Hospice.
