David Birenbaum Obituary

Dr. David Birenbaum

Known affectionately by many of his patients as Dr. B, Dr. David Birenbaum was born in San Francisco and truly left his heart there, for he always carried a love of that city with him. His wife, Joyce, a native Angelino, wanted to settle in Southern California. After serving as a Captain in the army, David compromised by choosing to live in a small town called Thousand Oaks. David was the 4th dentist in Thousand Oaks. He opened his practice on Thousand Oaks Blvd. when there were still more cows than people around.

A Fellow with the American Dental Society, Dr. B also served as President of the Santa Barbara/Ventura County Dental Society. A volunteer until the end, David, until recently, had a county-appointed role on Ventura County's Agency on Aging.

David knew how to live life to its fullest. He was truly a Renaissance man, interested in all things. An avid photographer, he would travel all over the world with Joyce and document the people and places he saw. He entertained many friends and family with slide shows of exotic locales like Africa, the Soviet Union, and China before much of the Western world could visit there. David loved to hike, cross-country ski, swim, watch the Lakers, fish, play tennis and racquetball and host family BBQs in the backyard. Most of our family parties centered around David's house. A handyman extraordinaire, if he didn't know how to fix something, he learned it (and every detail about it). David built furniture, made jewelry, operated a small train, built and decorated a Victorian dollhouse, and drew cartoons. With the advent of the Digital Age, Dave taught himself computer photography and embraced all things technological. His advice was measured, well-thought out, and always correct. Dr. David Birenbaum will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife Joyce, daughters Debbie and Laurie, their husbands William and Steven, and grandchildren who love him dearly, Sarah, her husband Michael, Sam, Jonathan, Henry, Alanna, a great grandson, Fionn, his sister Sally Robinson, and his beloved Labradoodle, Archie. Onto the next adventure, David.
