Don Bathgate was my first flag football coach. I still remember practices at Old Orchard Park and games at all the parks in the SCV. Kevin and family, your father was a great man and mentor. May God bless you and your families during this time and always.

The world has lost a truly exceptional human being and a principled, genuine leader of all of those who
were fortunate enough to work with Don over his career in education. He loved being Principal at ACHS, where I got to be one of those people from 1986 through his retirement in 1993, but he was the happiest I ever saw him when in 1999, I visited the "Gentleman Farmer" on his farm in Anchor, Illinois.
Showing me all about the place, the new computerized Tractor he had recently acquired, and telling me about how to grow soybeans and corn, I could see that he had settled into retirement and could relax and enjoy his family and the small town life, for almost twenty years more after I last saw him. Rest in peace.

It was such an honor to serve as Mr. Bathgate's secretary when he was Principal of ACHS. He was an incredibly good, kind, honorable man. He was a "by-the-book," stickler-for-the-rules" administrator. He exemplified the American Heartland moral courage values we admire.

Kevin, Cindy, Carla, and your families, You will be in my prayers. I have such wonderful memories of your dad and mom. Your mom was the best baker of luscious treats; your dad was never above helping with any job... from fixing things around campus (in his white shirt, suit, and tie) to serving as Santa. I once told him I was glad to see he did the right, though unpopular thing. (I don't remember what it was) He replied: "I have to look myself in the mirror every day." He attended my retirement party in 2007, and I reflected on his comment in my final address. He sent this beautiful poem, which served as his guiding light. I'm sure a brighter light embraces him now.

God Bless You, Mr. Bathgate... and Sheri.

THANK YOU TO
Donald G. Bathgate
Principal of Adolfo Camarillo High School, 1985 to 1993

He always told me he has to face the man in the mirror every morning. He is remembered for his honesty and integrity. I mentioned this at my retirement party in 2007. After that, he sent me a copy of The Man in the Glass, Author Unknown.
He said he always tries to live by these principles. When Fred was documenting my retirement pictures, he included Donald G. Bathgate among the
PRINCIPALS WITH PRINCIPLES

The Man in the Glass
(Author Unknown)

When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to a mirror and look at yourself
And see what THAT man has to say.
For it isn't your father or mother or wife
Whose judgment upon you must pass,
The fellow whose verdict counts most in
your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.
Some people might think you're a straight-shooting chum
And call you a wonderful guy.
But the man in the glass says you're only
a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.
He's the fellow to please, never mind all the rest,
For he's with you clear to the end,
And you've passed your most dangerous
test
If the guy in the glass is your friend.

With sincere heartfelt sympathy in the passing of a wonderful man. I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Bathgate at Adolfo Camarillo High School back in the 1980's. He was a stellar Principal, admired and respected by all. His smile lit up the room and he truly cared about students and staff. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
