Donald (Don) Lee Skyllingstad passed away on July 5, 2011, at the age of 63, while on vacation at Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho, where he was visiting his childhood friend Wayne Hollingshead and his wife Kathy.
Don was born on April 27, 1948, in Ventura, and spent his life there. Don graduated from Ventura High School in 1966. He had a very strong work ethic which he got from his parents, Lee and Grace Skyllingstad. Rain or shine, sick or well, he put on his boots every day and got out there. He worked in construction for many years and spent the last 20 years of his career with the Southern California Gas Company.
In the early years Don was very involved in his local sports car club; putting on rallies with his clubs and annual camping trips. He loved the beach, enjoyed surfing , water skiing, and taking his canoe out on the ocean, lakes and rivers. His favorite place to be on the water was Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho, where he has been going since he was a child with his parents and sister, then later his wife and children and grandchildren. Don was very active in coaching his children in sports. He loved participating so much that he became a certified umpire so that he could stay involved long after his children stopped playing. It was an activity that he enjoyed very much. We always knew that when he had his umpire bag with him when he left for work in the morning, that he would come home with stories of a good game. In his later years, Don became quite the baker. His famous pies and pumpkin bread, and pecan brittle were enjoyed by many. His lemon meringue pie took the first place ribbon at the Ventura County Fair in 1999 after placing second the year before. He also became an avid fan of USC football and could be found most days of the week sporting his cardinal and gold with either a hat, t-shirt, or sweatshirt.
Don had wonderful sense of humor. He loved to make people laugh with his jokes and stories. The tables could be easily turned to get him to laugh, uncontrollably, with a laugh that could not be ignored nor mistaken for anyone else's, "hee hee hee hee, snort snort snort, hee hee hee," deep breath, and repeat. . . Don could be found every morning around 7:30 a.m. with his "Board of Directors," a group of neighbors and friends, at Django's Coffee Shop catching up on the local news and happenings of the neighborhood. Most of all, Don, was a loving husband, father, brother, son, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
Donald Lee Skyllingstad is survived by his wife of 35 years, Cheryl Skyllingstad; sister, Carol Burgoa and brother-in-law Jim Gonsman; daughters, Karen Legat, Danita Crosby, Kelly Skyllingstad, Ryann Skyllingstad Stough, and son, Jason Skyllingstad; grandchildren, Steven Leos, Kirsten Akers, Susan Akers, Matthew Legat, Meghan Legat, Dylan Atwood, Mackenzie Atwood, Makayla Atwood; and one great-grandson, Aleksei Akers.
The family will be holding a memorial service at Surfer's Point in Ventura at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 14, open to family and friends.

Cheryl and family;
So sorry to hear of Donnie's passing. As well as "hit the nickle" we will always remember "Tankity tank". Don had a way of delivering laughter that was infectious and we are all better people because of that.
God bless him. Love and sympathy to all.

I met Don when he was in high school, and dating my younger sister. We used to have debates over who was better, Johnny Mathis or The Kingston Trio.
I loved his whimsical sense of humor, and I believe I made him laugh a few times, too. I will miss him.

Skyllingstad Family,
It is with the deepest regret that I am writing this. My family lived at the dead-end of Channel Dr. in Ventura & were next door neighbors of Wayne Hollingshead & of course that meant we saw a lot of Donnie! Donnie & Wayne were a couple of funny & crazy kids. Donnie was a great kid, even though we loss contact as adults, I'm sure he was a GREAT Husband & Family Man. With sincere sympathy, Penny(Small) & Lonnie Wolverton

I had the privilege of working with Don's Dad and then Don himself in the summer at Coastal Valley Canning back in the mid 60's. A better family never existed. Will miss Don at our annual Xmas lunches with all the old gang.

My fondest memories of Don are from when I was about 4 years old. I used to love riding in his MG Midget with him and my Aunt Susan. Ever since, that has been my dream car! Another memory, though I wasn't fond of it at the time was when they took me to the snow. I was standing at the bottom of a hill and Don rolled a small snowball down to me. Well, it grew in size as it rolled down the hill and by the time it got to me, it was so big it knocked me over! I can still see them at the top of the hill laughing like crazy. I'm sure I wasn't laughing at the time, but I always laugh when looking back.
Don will be missed. I am praying for Cheryl and kids.
Love,

Cheryl,Kelly,Ryan,Jason,Danita:
My heart aches right along with you as I write this. I was a part of your lives a very long time ago when you were very young. I'm so very blessed because of it. I have so many fond memories of all of you. Your family oriented ways taught me so many things being an only child. Cheryl & Don were like second parents to me. I spent a lot of time babysitting for you during my summers. Don was so patient. He'd drive me home all those late nights after babysitting in the old blue van with the flag that hung in the back window? We'd listen to rock all the way home. He was so very HANDSOME even back then. I think I was all of 13? He'd always greet me saying "Hi Tanya Leeeee!" Haha, probably because we shared the same middle name. I'll never forget the mustache. The way he made my parents (Chuck & Leigh) laugh with his jokes."Hit the nickel, Hit the dime". I don't think I've ever seen my Dad laugh harder than when he was around Donny. You all are so very lucky to have had him in your lives. I never had the pleasure of trying his baking but I did enjoy MANY BBQ's way back in the day with him. He was exceptional. Cheryl's bread....not so much. Unless you enjoy charcoal. :)
*poke, poke Cheryl* I love you....all of you. Saying prayers for all of you at this time. Remember he's not gone. He's just moved on. To a better, beautiful, everlasting life and happily watching over all of you. His beautiful family!~ Blessings & love.

So many memories together with Don, Cheryl, & the kids. Our families met in the Tri-Counties Sports Car Club. We spent many hours playing cribbage, camping, enjoying a cold one, and laughing at Don's jokes (Hit the nickel, hit the dime, etc.) When we meet again, I expect you'll be there with the cribbage board out with a cold beer ready.

Dear Cheryl and family,
Dee and I are so very sorry to hear of Don's passing. As a now retired vice-president of W.M. Lyles Co., I vividly remember that Don was one of our best and most dependable workers, for almost 20 years beginning in the 1970's, until he left to go to work for the Gas Co. He became one of our valued foremen because he was also smart. He was well liked by everyone with whom he worked. Terrific sense of humor. Unforgettable. We regret that we will not see him again and that we will not get to taste one of his pies. He will be missed.

Don, you are gone way to soon. You were my first love and high-school sweetheart. In later years became like a brother to me. I always enjoyed spending time with my "ex-wife" and you and the kids. You will be missed. So glad we had these last years as friends extended family. I will always have love in my heart for you.
