Jean Pierre Dufau died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Jan. 5, 2008.
He was born Jan. 9, 1929, in Oxnard to Pierre and Agnes Falxa Dufau and was raised on the family ranch on Etting Road in Oxnard. His French Basque heritage and his family's history in the early farming community of Ventura County were a great source of pride throughout his life.
JP attended Oxnard High School, University of California, Davis, and California Polytechnic University, Pomona, and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a director of the Seaboard Lemon Association, a member of Ventura County Farm Bureau and a founder and director of Pleasant Valley Vegetable co-operative. He was a member of Saticoy Country Club and the Tri-Counties Seniors Golf Association. He was a long-standing and active member of Rancheros Visitadores (Campo Adolfo where he was most recently serving as president), Rancheros Adolfo and the Ventura County Sheriff's Posse.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helene Barnett Dufau, and their children, Dennis (wife Laurel) and Denise (husband Patrick Droppleman). "Itachi" will be remembered with love by his five grandchildren, Alison, Chelsie, Daniele, Brigette and Natalie. In addition, he is survived by his sisters, Madeleine Glover (husband Malcolm) of Rancho Mirage, Josephine Clark of Rancho Mirage; brother, Donald (wife Bobbi) of Ojai; and many nephews and nieces.
JP will be missed by his family and friends and will be remembered always for his dedication to family life; ranching; his love of golf, hunting and horses; and for his talents as a chef.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice or the Museum of Ventura County.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at St. Mary Magdalen Chapel, 2532 E. Ventura Blvd., Old Town Camarillo. Burial will follow at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park.
Assisting the family with funeral arrangements is Conejo Mountain Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 2052 Howard Road, Camarillo; phone 805-482-1959.

I only started to know J.P. at Vons as a customer and learned slowly after that my dad and him both were involved with the Camarillo family many years ago. Also my godfather Sam Camacho used to do the cooking for the Visitadores ride that he participated in every year for 40+ years. He used to tell me quick stories and I always looked forward to seeing him at the store. What impressed me the most is that he barely knew me but I received a sympathy card from him when my father passed away last february 23. Great person!

I have very fond memories of J.P., my first memory was when J.P. took me and some other fellows to see a Rams football game. Later we became good friends doing business together. If I had to describe J.P. in one word, it would be "Gentleman". He will be missed.
