Maria Elena Villalobos, 18, passed away on Sept. 12, 2008, in Chatsworth, Calif., in the Metrolink train accident.
Maria Elena was born on Jan. 4, 1990, in East Los Angeles and grew up in Moorpark. She graduated from Moorpark High School in June 2008 and had just begun pursuing a degree at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. One of Maria Elena's proudest accomplishments was the Senior Fashion Show at Moorpark High School in April 2008. All of the designs were originals from her Maria Elena line, a label she hoped would be as famous one day as that of her favorite designer, Betsey Johnson. Maria Elena always had a sketchbook in hand working on her designs. She knew from an early age that her passion was fashion design. Maria Elena will be remembered for her warm smile and infectious laughter. She brought joy to all who knew her.
Maria Elena is survived by her mother and father, Belen and Gonzalo; sister, Bianca; brother, Raymond; grandfather, Santiago Gonzalez; grandmother, Teresa Villalobos; godparents, Veronica Gonzalez and Martin Villalobos; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m., at St. Peter Claver in Simi Valley. Monsignor Paul Albee will officiate at the funeral Mass at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Moorpark. Burial will be held at Assumption Catholic Cemetery in Simi Valley. A celebration of Elena's life will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Campus Canyon School in Moorpark. In honor of Maria Elena, please wear pink.
The Maria Elena Villalobos Memorial Fund has been created to establish a scholarship in her name at Moorpark High School. Donations will be accepted at any Wells Fargo Bank or school site in the Moorpark Unified School District.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of the family-owned and -operated Rose Family Funeral Home, Simi Valley.
To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

It's been a long time that me and my family hasn't seen you in a long time I had good and funny moments with you, but I know you are in our hearts I love you nena.

On that Sept. night in 2008, I was one who went to Chatsworth HS to help the families waiting for news. I prayed with and for the Villalobos family, meeting a sister, dad, and another family member. I remember seeing Maria's photo on the LA news, and I have photos of the crosses that remained for one year near the tracks in Chatsworth.
I have written and recorded a song for Maria Elena, called 'Waiting for Maria Elena,' which I want the family to hear and understand before I do anything else with it. The message is this: 'They were waiting for Maria Elena, and now (she's in the heavenlies I believe) 'now SHE'S WAITING FOR YOU.'
I will contact the family or would appreciate help in contacting family.
This permanent guest book, in my mind, reflects the eternity God makes us a part of, through faith.

I think about Maria often. I only knew her in middle school. But we hung out a lot at school and sometimes outside of school at my neighbors house. She was a grade younger than me. And I remember relating to her more than the other girls in our group of friends because we had the same style and were a little heavier than everyone else. She was hilarious. And just as everyone said, her laugh and smile was contagious. It's amazing to see pictures of her, and what an impact that smile makes on everyone. It must be wonderful to be remembered as the girl who was always smiling as big as possible in every picture. Anyways, it's just one of those nights where I am sitting here in tears, reflecting on this tragedy and I just wanted to say that God only picks the best to come join him. And he just couldn't wait for Maria any longer. Love you, angel, rest in peace and see ya later.

Dear Maria,
I can't believe it's been a year since that accident. Things have not been the same without you. What happened really shook everyone. Personally, it has taught me to treasure my life more. Although we weren't as close the past few years I always considered you my friend and always thought of you when I was reminded of an inside joke we had and whatnot. A few weeks ago I found a note you had written me either in middle school or high school and it made me so happy to be able to remember the silly things we talked about. I hope you can find peace in wherever you have moved on to. You've touched the lives of so many people including my own and I will absolutely NEVER forget you. I miss you and I love you.

Take me away, A secret place.
A sweet escape, Take me away.
Take me away to better days.
Take me away, A higher place.
There's a place that I go,
But nobody knows.
Where the rivers flow,
And I call it home.
And there's no more lies.
In the darkness, there's light.
And nobody cries.
There's only butterflies.

María,
I miss you so much. There are no words that I can utilize to describe my sadness. There isn't a day that passes by in which I don't think about you or your beautiful smile. You had such a positive impact on so many people and to consider you one of my close friends was a blessing from the Almighty. I'm so glad I was able to go to prom with you; I had so much fun and it's one of our memories that I will never forget. You and I definitely had some great times together--riding in your bug, filming Old Mary's Suite, going to Del Taco for lunch, hanging out with Juan, Mike (and Jessie), and Allie. The world is less beautiful now, but Heaven is even more lovely. Even though it's difficult for all of us down here to imagine living in a world without you, it's comforting knowing that you're in a much better place.
I love you, María. Please keep in touch.

Belen-
I'm so sorry for the lost of your daughter. News travels fast but I just found the list of the unfortunate passengers of the fatal train wreck. There is nothing I can say to help you, your family, and Maria's friends cope with this tragedy, but I will pray that God will comfort you all. I enjoyed working at Campus Canyon and smile at the memory of all the wonderful teachers, workers, and children that I left behind to move with my family to Canada. Again, my prayers are with you.

Maria Elena is my middle child. I still remember her at 4 years old with short curly hair and a dimple on her cheek. She was sassy and loveable. I remember her taking my cheap sewing machine to sew her flare jeans into skinny jeans. Fashion was her dreams. I will miss seeing her; sitting on her bedroom floor straightening her hair and putting on her eye liner. Or when she would wake up Saturday mornings and make her favorite egg breakfast. I will miss her goofyness, laughter, glow in her eyes everytime she thought of being a famous designer. My little girl i will miss hugging you. I know your in heaven, but i want you here with me.
I love you and I hope you forgive me for beinging hard on you sometimes.
I love you my Lenita.

Mr. Villalobos and family,
I sit here at my computer after having read the article about Maria Elena, finding it difficult to hold back the tears for your loss.
We wall have dreams for our children and it just seems so unfair when they do not have fair chance to realize those dreams.
There is nothing that anyone can say to make you feel better, but know that there are many good people that feel for you and wish you the best in this difficult time.
Our prayers are with you.

Maria, my love, I miss you terribly. I can't stop thinking about you. Since first grade, we've been friends and I can't even begin to believe that you're not here. Burying you was probably the hardest thing I think I've ever had to do. Whenever I saw the white casket, I cried. It's crazy to know that you're in there. I had a dream last night that it was all a joke, but I woke up to face the harsh reality. There are so many people who are moved by you. You have brought me and many others so much closer together. You're definitely a legend and we're going to keep you this way forever. I love you, Maria. Don't stop smiling and always be fierce.

i've known Maria for two years. i met her when i was a junior in high school and immediately we became great friends. during senior year of school, we became very close. every morning before school would start, i would always sit in her white bug with her, listening to music from her ipod and talking about everything.
i remember her stressing out so much for the fashion show, and i would always say "its okay maria, its going to be fine!"
she would alaways ask for my opinion on her designs and i valued that soo much. she always told me that when we got older, we would start a business together ans we would be partners.
i will still hold up to that dream<3
i love you Maria.
you're great friend,

I recall as a young girl, going to Mexico during our Summer vacation and staying at the Ranch. My sister's and I would play and put together dances and Maria's father and uncles would come and join our fun. They are a great family - very good people. "La Familia Ybarra" sends the family our sincere sympathy. May the Lord strengthen your hearts during this difficult time. You are in our prayers.

I was actually the LAST PERSON to see beautiful Maria...
My name is Anna, & I met Maria through school, FIDM in Downtown LA.
We had English class together.
September 12th, 2008
It was the LAST DAY of school.
I finished my essay about 2 minutes earlier than Maria and I was sitting outside waiting for Maria to finish. Her train ride was usually at 3:30pm so we had alot of time to kill because we finished around 12. So I decided to take Maria to CHINATOWN. I asked her if she had ever been there, she said "never!" so I knew I had to take her because I wanted to introduce to my "culture". Yes, I am asian, lol.
So I toke Maria around Chinatown... I BOUGHT HER FOOD! She loved it!
Oh, I also need to mention that Maria is the first person to make the FIRST DAMAGE/SCRATCHES on my new car.
Those are the only damages I will love. Because Maria made them.
So Maria and I walked around Chinatown together, while she was munching on this Asian SPONGE cake. After the sponge cake I fed her this Chinese dumpling thing and Maria loved that too.
As we got close to 3:00pm, we were heading back to FIDM.
I dropped her off at the corner of Macy's in Downtown LA, not sure what street, but I always toke Maria to the station because I didn't want her to walk.
Me: "I had so much fun today! I am so glad I toke you to Chinatown and showed you around!"
Maria: "Me too, thank you so much!"
Me: "I really enjoyed feeding you! I hope you liked it"
Maria: "I loved it!"
Me: "I'm glad! I promise I'll take you to sushi and boba next time!"
Maria: "Okay! I can't wait"
As Maria stepped out of my car, I did too because I wanted to help her with her bags and give her a hug.
I gave Maria a hug.. and as usual.. every time I dropped her off for her train ride... I told her...
"take care sweetie!! don't talk to strangers on the train okay!"
and she would say "okay, i won't, see you soon!"
But this time she told me to text her and that we'd hang out during the break.
I told her I will.
SO THAT NIGHT.
I got home and I looked at my livingroom television, I saw the news on.
My sister told me that there had been a train crash. And it was live... I didn't panick YET until they had said the train left at 4pm and it was headed to some city I wasn't sure of BUT I had a feeling that it MIGHT HAVE BEEN the train Maria was on.
I immediaty toke out my cellphone and realized that I didn't have her number in my phone yet.
I was throwing all my books out trying to find the paper that Maria had written down her number on but I couldn't find it.
So I turned on my computer and messaged Maria on Facebook and I left her a short message asking her to call me as soon as she saw it.
Monday, September 15, 2008
I see that "Maria Villalobos was "tagged" in some photos...
I read "In Loving Memory of Maria Elena Villalobos" and I freeze... tears just started pouring down my face.
I was the LAST PERSON to see Maria.
The LAST PERSON to hug Maria.
The LAST PERSON to see Maria fade from my vision...
Maria, I promised that I'd buy you sushi and boba the next time I see you and sweetie, I promise I will.
Rest in Peace and I love you so much. You were the first and BEST friend I made at FIDM, thank you for the memories and laughter you gave me. Your truly an angel?

Helen and I watched your children grow up; it is hard, it is difficult to image not seeing Maria heading off to FIDM each morning. Its is through the strength of God that I pray for your family to get through this period and remember Maria as she lived.

Maria,
I did not know you, but you have been in my prayers since the breaking news of this tragic train wreck. Maybe it's your love of fashion, your beautiful picture that flashes on the T.V. or your young spirit that was taken much too soon? Whatever it may be, it breaks my heart to think you were taken so early. As I watched your mom on the news that Friday night, I couldn't hold back the tears and wanted nothing more then the two of you to be reunited...My mom and I went to the gathering at Grace Brethren (Simi) Sunday night and stood up for you as they prayed for all the victims that lost their beautiful lives. I hope your family knows how your soul has touched so many people across the county.
May you be the new Fashion Queen of all the Angels.
God Bless and Rest in Peace.

I wish to attend. My heart and prayers go out to you, forever. All my love...
