Philip Tyner Obituary
Philip Edward Tyner, 65, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2008, from heart failure. He passed peacefully as he slept beside his wife of 17 years, Carolyn Tyner.
He was a lifetime Ventura County resident.
Phil was born Dec. 19, 1942, in Ventura at Foster Memorial Hospital. He was a graduate of Ventura High School in 1960 and received his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from La Verne University. After two years of serving his country in the United States Army, Phil was hired as a deputy sheriff after his graduation from the Sheriff's Academy in 1966. He worked in several different divisions of the Sheriff's Department over his 20-year career, including patrol, narcotics, vice and extradition. In 1987, he began working as a private investigator, as well a special investigator to the District Attorney's Office. He was still working part-time as an investigator for the Sheriff's Office when he passed.
Always surrounded by his loving family, Phil loved to travel the world, play golf, pilot his ultralight, and ride his new Harley-Davidson. He loved to laugh and would dance with any willing woman on the floor! He loved life and loved his family. He will be missed dearly by those who knew him.
Phil is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Ann Tyner; son, Geoff Tyner; daughter, Tessa Tyner Riley; sister, Lynne Tyner; and many other family members, especially his numerous great-nieces and nephew! We are all so much richer for having known him.
Phil was preceded in death by his father, Lee Tyner; mother, Mary Tyner; and brother, Terry Tyner.
Visitation was Wednesday, July 2, at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. A celebration of Phil's life will take place at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, at the Ventura Baptist Church, 5415 Ralston St., Ventura, with the Rev. Leonard DeWitt officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ventura County Deputy Sheriff's Association, 981 S. Victoria Ave., Ventura, CA 93003 or by calling 805-639-9218.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home and Crematory, Ventura.

What a shock to learn that Phil has passed away after seeing both he and Carolyn just the Saturday before. My thoughts and prayers are with you Carolyn. I know Phil is smiling down on us all wanting us to enjoy each and every day. I feel blessed that you both touched my life this year. Carolyn - if you're up for another whale watching trip in Loreto again in the future - I'm game. I know Phil will be there and everywhere you go to watch over you!

Carolyn, we only spent one brief weekend with ya'll at a Winstar Gala with my brother-in-law & sister-in-law, (Ray & Paula) And what a fabulous time it was! We fell in love with Phil. My Rick couldn't stop talking about what a great guy Phil was. They had so much fun playing golf. Phil hung out with us at the horse races the next day. Carolyn, we are so blessed to have wonderful memories and to have had them in our lives. My heart is breaking for your loss, I know there will be many difficult days ahead. Just know that so many people are praying for you & your family. The Lord will give you strength to endure. What a celebration it was as Phil entered the gates heaven. My Rick passed away 16 months ago & I know that he rejoiced to receive him. The Lord be with you.

I was extremely saddened to hear about my buddy Phil. He was such a joy to be around with that wonderful smile and his zest for life. Carolyn, know that we love you dearly! Phil was just a joy to be with. He laughed just to laugh, he smiled just to smile and he loved just to love. We will miss him at our WinStar Derby gala and as our golf partner for the BSI Annual golf tournament, but he will always be in our hearts!

I decided to read through some of the entries in the guest book. It brought tears and smiles at the same time. It's obvious how special Phil was to so many people. We didn't see much of you and Phil but I tell you, when we did, all we could see was his smile. It was so contagious that we smiled along with him. Phil was one of the really great guys that made feel at ease when I was a rookie deputy and I always enjoyed working with him throughout the next 30 years. Everyone loved seeing him at those Narc parties at the marina because he was always smiling and having fun and you couldn't help but have fun too. He will be sorely missed.

Carolyn, I hardly knew you but I knew Phil from many years ago. I went on ski trips with Phil from the mid 70's to the late 80's. He will always be one of my favorite people. I tell you what a gentle and always happy man Phil was. A permanent smile he had every time our family was with him. If it wasn't for you, we wouldn't of had our wedding videotaped some 22 years ago, or the grand opening of our new school this year on tape. You were always there for everyone. As someone else said it earlier, it must come with the name "Tyner". Carolyn, you sure kept him young with all your travels and fun activities. I had known Phil since the 80's, and cannot recall a time that he did not have that smile on his face, and the twinkle that so many others have mentioned. He was truly a unique, one-of-a-kind person for his outlook on life, given his problems. He leaves a big hole in so many lives, and was an example to many.

My sincere condolences to Phil's family. Phil and I worked together back in the late 60's and early 70's.
Phil was one of those rare individuals that could always look at the bright side and make you forget about what you may have just gone through after a bad night. Always happy and making everyone smile. He was truly a joy to be around. One of the good guys for sure. he will be missed. I still think about what a pleasure it was to see him after so many years, when I happened to be in California a few years back and saw him at the Retiree's BBQ. Dear Carolyn, I knew Phil from days at Ventura High and through my friendship with Terry when we both worked at the Star. They were two of Ventura's finest young men who obviously grew into respected and beloved men of community service.
Although my journey never brought me back to Ventura, I would hear updates now and then from friends, and I even ran into Phil once when he was considering a property purchase in the Conejo Valley. Just as all your visitors to this guest book have said, Phil made your day brighter and lighter. he philled a lot of holes in this kid's heart...especially after my own dad passed 10 years ago. i will not forget his graciousness, his humor and advice, and his ever-willingness to "just have one more" :) i will miss especially miss the "history of ventura" chats when he shared about buildings and places and gas stations of the past. a true blue ventura guy. what a great, great man.

I've known Phil for over 30 years, and have so many wonderful memories of him as a deputy sheriff, as a DA investigator, and a friend. I will miss the sunshine that Phil brought into our dreary office every day. I will miss his laughter, his contagious smile, his gripe about the coffee I made not being strong enough for him, his singing along with Rod Stewart, Aaron Neville or Les Mis, having to fix the computer for him, his hawaiian shirts, the many stories about everything from his Army days to his recent trips....I will miss Phil.

Carolyn. I grew up with Phil, Terry, and later Lynn. My mom and Dad were close friends with his parents as well. Terry and I were the same age and Phil was the same age as my brother.
I was a Ventura Police Officer for 30 yrs and often would run into Terry and Phil on the job.
I extend my prayers to you and the family.
The last time I saw Phil I gave him a tape from the 40s or so which had his mom on it.
There is an empty place in my heart. Both Terry and my brother are gone.

Uncle Phil, the R&A Club gave you a nice tribute last night. I thank you for being such a big part of my life, as well as Tina's, Grace's, and Sophia's. I'm gonna miss those random, yet often, evenings when our phone would ring and it's you saying "Carolyn and I want to come by and see you guys, is that OK?". And as I'd respond, "sure, what time can you make it?", I would look out the window and see you already parked in my driveway, walking in with lots of food and a several bottles of wine. Phil was one of those cops who could do his job without making it personal, simply a true professional.
I can't remember ever talking with Phil when he didn't have a kind word and a great big smile on his face. He was always interested in what you were doing rather than focusing on himself.
I never heard an unkind word spoken by anyone concerning Phil. He will continue to live in the memories of all who knew him.

Carolyn: We are so sorry for your loss. My mother in law and I met you and Phil at the wine bar in downtown Ventura about two months ago. You and Phil had just returned from England and we talked about old Ventura and knew alot of the same people. My husband had open heart surgery a couple of years ago and we discussed Phil's ailment which was the same as my husbands. I shared information with him that evening and we exchanged numbers with you. You were both fun and very gracious and I wish that my husband could have met Phil. I will always remember Phils smile, I can picture him now, walking down that big hallway on Poli St. He always had a kind word or a laugh for the dispatchers and the Watch Commander. The old cliche "To know him was to love him" was never more fitting for a person than it was for Phil. He was one of those rare individuals that had the ability to make you love him the first time you met him. I had a smile on my face after meeting him the first time and every time thereafter that I spent time with him and I'll have that same smile on my face as I say good-bye. I had dinner with Phil two weeks ago and bought him a Guinness, so he still owes me a drink. I can’t believe he won’t be buying it for me now. I say this because it’s true and because I’m sure Phil would get a laugh out of it. I have never met a man more ready to laugh. Phil's good humor and wit were always a welcome part of my mornings at the DA's office, when he would stop by with new cases and chat for a few minutes.
I was surprised to hear that he was past 60; he reminded me of a grown up version of the kid from "Jerry McGuire," with his brush cut, round glasses and huge smile.
His sudden passing is a terrible shock.

I worked with Phil for 30 years. He taught me to water ski in 1970 and introduced me to my wife of 29 years in 1978. Do I love him........you bet! I also believe that Phil saved my life on a "Man With Gun" call in 1968, Simi Valley. I will miss the always smiling face of Phil Tyner. He was like a family member. I'll see ya again someday big guy.

Phil was a great guy to work with. He was my partner on an extradition of a violent female and definitely made my job easier. He was always kind and supportive and was a pleasure to be around.

Having Phil as an extended part of our family was a joy and a blessing.He always made family gatherings a little brighter with his fun loving attatuide and his sincere love for family. He will be greatly missed by all.
