Richard Gedies Obituary

Longtime resident of Port Hueneme went home to the Lord on Sept. 27, 2007. Richard passed away at St. John's Regional Medical Center.

Richard was born Aug. 28, 1929, in Arlington, Mass. He attended local schools and spent his childhood in Arlington.

He enlisted in the Navy in August 1946, while still 16 years old. After boot camp he came to the Port Hueneme Naval Construction Battalion Center to become a Seabee. He loved the Navy and had tours to Alaska, Guam, Saipan, Okinawa, the Philippines and two tours to Vietnam. He retired as a first class builder after 20 years of honorable service.

He is survived by his wife and soul mate, Josephine. They met while both were in the Navy at Bainbridge, Md. They were happily married for 52 years.

He is also survived by his son, Daniel A. Gedies of Canoga Park, Calif.; son, Ralph A. Gedies of Fall Creek, Ore.; daughters-in-law, Robin Nelson Gedies of Winnetka, Calif., and Kandy Wilhelm-Gedies of Fall Creek, Ore.; grandchildren, Kristina M. Gedies, Jennifer L. Gedies, Rhett A. Gedies and Kassandra "Kasey" Gedies; brother and sister-in-law Robert L. Gedies and Jean Funk-Gedies of Arlington, Mass.; sister, Ruth A. Russo of Medford, Mass.; sisters-in-law, Molly Garcia, Rebecca Garcia and Virginia Madrid, all of Albuquerque, N.M.; and numerous nieces and nephews in California, New Mexico, Massachusetts and Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard A. Gedies; mother, Antionette Gedies; and brother-in-law, Steven Russo.

Richard loved getting up very early to see the sunrise. He loved the family trips to San Diego on the 4th of July. He loved a good steak, chocolate cake and ice cream, but most of all he loved when family and friends gathered around to celebrate the holidays.

He was a quiet man who will be missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Santa Clara Mortuary, 2370 North H St., Oxnard, CA 93036; phone 805-485-5757. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5 at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 463 W. Pleasant Valley Road, Oxnard. A graveside service will follow at Santa Clara Cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Santa Clara Mortuary.

Dear Jo:

Angelo and I are deeply sorry for your loss. Dad, Roy Wilhelm, called to let me know Rich had passed and he was telling me that you were so encouraged by his improvement that you thought he would be coming home soon. We read his obit this morning and had no idea of the full and diverse life he and both of you have lived. I know the memories will always be the thing that keeps him alive in your heart. We will keep you in our prayers and thoughts.

Love
Angelo & Kim Zandona (formerly Wilhelm)
