Samuel B. Schleifer, 94, died peacefully in his Ventura home on Nov. 23, 2011, cared for by his oldest son, Robert.
He was born on April 21, 1917, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Jacob and Sadie Schleifer. Soon after, the family moved to Ellenville, N.Y., where he was raised on a small family farm. He attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and was proud that he graduated in three and a half years, funding his education by waiting tables during the summer at resorts in the Catskills. In 1944-45 he was a Navy Seaman 1st Class stationed in San Diego and Naval Station Great Lakes, Ill. He and his wife Jean were married 29 years, and they had four children. He was a loyal and thrifty spouse, family man and caring father. He opened the first TV store in Santa Barbara, and an unfinished furniture store, and later in life became a realtor and broker.
He is survived by his sister, Lily Copelan of Los Angeles, and niece and nephew, Betsy and Dennis Copelan; son, Robert Schleifer of Ventura; daughter, Betty Scott of Bellingham, Wash., and grandchildren, David Scott, Emily and husband Jon Duryee and Nathan Robert Scott; daughter, Susan Schleifer of Lafayette, La., and son-in-law, Mark DeWitt; and son, Nathan Schleifer of Nipomo, daughter-in-law, Kathryn Aurand and grandson, Jordan.

Sam's Family
We lived across the street until we moved to our first retirement home in Atascadero in 2001. We abandoned that & California in 2005 for our second & hopefully last retirement home in Indiana.
We enjoyed “Good Neighbor Sam's company, views on life, cooking, & quick paced 2 mile walks. We are sure he is in a far better place, but still he is missed. You have our condolences.
