Ted Whitacre Obituary

Ted Claybourn Whitacre

Ventura, CA

Ted Claybourn Whitacre of Ventura went to be with his heavenly Father on October 5, 2016 at a local hospital at the age of 87 following a brief illness.

Ted was born November 1928 in Sterling, Colorado to Donald Paul Whitacre Sr. and Pearl Emma Thompson Whitacre. He grew up in Nebraska, Iowa, Texas, New Mexico and San Diego. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1946 as a flight engineer, working on the B17 bomber. He was stationed in the Philippines, Japan, Australia, the South Pacific, then was stationed at Biggs Field in El Paso, Texas. He is a veteran of the Korean War.

Ted is survived by his wife of 32 years Evelyn Whitacre, daughters Diana Whitacre of Ventura, Eileen Whitacre of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Laura McCarren (Charles) of Atascadero and son Stephen Whitacre (Peggy) of Camarillo, four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Don Whitacre, William (Bill) Whitacre and sister Shirley Shedlock.

Ted was a member of the first United Methodist Church of Ventura, Ventura Breakfast Lions club and Scottish Rite Masons where he attained the position of 33 degree Mason in Washington D.C.

Besides being a loving husband and father, Ted will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by all his wonderful neighbors, many friends and fellow church members. Ted and Evelyn served meals to the homeless through their church for many years. Ted had a generous heart and was always the first to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it.

Arrangements are under the direction of Reardon Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday October 21, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church, 1338 E. Santa Clara St., Ventura.

I did not personally know Mr. Whitacre but for many years I walked my two dogs up the street. Super nice guy. We would chat a bit, Roxy and Randi (my dogs) would get a nice pat on the head, get a sniff and we would be off. During one quick chat me mentioned he was a Korean War Vet (same as both my parents) and was an aviator. My thoughts will be with him and his family each time I walk by.

Ted was a very caring and compassionate person with a great sense of humor. Ted and Evelyn were always so supportive of Sue Fredericks and the other wonderful residents of Hillside House in Santa Barbara. I enjoyed Ted and Evelyn's friendship.

Grandpa Ted will always hold a special place in my heart. I would spend hours at his house every day, helping him with his remote control planes or just random projects around the garage. His kindness to me will be something I will thrive to copy for the rest of my life. Thank you Grandpa Ted for being such an influential person in my life.
