Eugene Mathias Obituary

Dr. Eugene Mathias, "Dr. Gene", who was born on December 30, 1927 in Oklahoma City, OK, entered eternal life in Tulare Ca., on May 26, 2009, surrounded by his family. Dr. Mathias is survived by his wife of 57 years, Priscilla. His sons, Bruce and wife Wendy of Aptos, Ca., Craig of Tulare and a daughter, Dena Korenwinder and husband Mike. His brother Jim Mathias of Three Rivers, and sister Patricia Guerrero and husband Charlie of Tulare. Eight grandchildren: Brian Mathias of Aptos, Ca., Allie Schoenauer of Morro Bay, Ca., Taylor Mattos, Audra Mathias, Shannon Mathias, Hillary Mathias, Hayley Vieira and Morgan Korenwinder all of Tulare, Ca. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jana Mathias, brother Robert Mathias, parents Dr. Charlie Mathias and Lillian Mathias. Dr. Eugene attended Tulare Union High School, graduating in 1945. He received a bachelor degree in 1949 from Stanford University. In 1951 he received a Masters Degree in Entomology from Stanford University, in 1953 he received a Masters degree in Hospital Administration from the University of Chicago. June 1957 he received his Doctor of Medicine degree and took his internship at the University of Santa Clara and his residency at Tulare County Hospital. He had his family practice for 43 years in Tulare, 24 of those years jointly with his father, Dr. Charlie. They were affectionately referred to by the community as Dr. Charlie and Dr. Gene. He delivered many babies in Tulare. There were many things he enjoyed in life; especially golf, mules, horses, the mountains, fly fishing, tying flies, his family friends and the Tulare community. He was a member of the Tulare Rotary Club, Tulare Elks Club, Charter member of Kaweah Fly Fisherman's Association, Tulare City Historical Society, Tulare United Methodist Church, and held the position of Chief of Staff at Tulare District Hospital. Dr. Gene was loved by his family, many friends and past patients. He will truly be missed. Remembrances can be made in his memory to the Tulare City Historical Society or your favorite charity. Visitation will be on Sunday, May 31, 2009 from 12 noon to 8 p.m. at Peers Lorentzen Funeral Chapel, Tulare,Ca. Services will be held on Monday, June 1, 2009 at 12 noon at the Tulare United Methodist Church, 228 W. Kern Ave., Tulare, Ca.

I moved to Tulare Ca when I was 9mths pregnant. I was introduced to Dr. Gene, he became my Doctor, and also deliverd my son. He always made you feel special. Today is my sons Birthday he is 36yrs old. My sincere condolences to the family

As an R.N. at Tulare District Hospital, my mother was always delighted to work with Dr. Gene. My first granddaughter was delivered by Dr. Gene. Three generations well served by Dr. Gene, such an outstanding member of his community. Most sincere condolences to the family.

DR. CHARLEY WAS THE DOCTOR THAT DELIVERED ME, 60 YEARS AGO. DR.GENE WAS MY DOCTOR LATER ON IN MY CHILDHOOD.
