Lola Christie Obituary

Lola Christie, 89, of Visalia passed away Friday, August 13, 2010. Lola was born on June 2, 1921, at the family homestead near Clayton, New Mexico. Her family moved to Ivanhoe when she was three years old. She spoke fondly of her childhood; family and friends were often entertained as she shared memories of her early years. Lola graduated from Visalia Union High School and the College of Sequoias, later returning to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse and she served as president of the LVN League of Tulare County. Lola loved working with children and volunteered her time for many years to organizations that promote good values and character in youth. She was a 25-year member of the Parent Teachers Association, serving as president at Carrie Barnett, Highland and Redwood High School. Redwood presented her with an honorary lifetime membership. She was an assistant Brownie Scout Leader and was the Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. Lola also had a passion for sharing her faith as demonstrated by her service as a founding board member of the Christian Women's Club. She loved to share Jesus with neighborhood children by organizing and teaching weekly Good News Clubs in her home. Lola also served as chairperson for the Tulare County Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF). Her CEF float was an annual fixture in the fair parade and she coordinated and was ever present at a face-painting booth at the fair where she shared the salvation story. Lola has been a member of the Parkside Chapel, a Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, since 1958. She loved the church and her family rarely missed a service. Lola lived her faith by teaching Sunday School classes, serving in women's groups, coordinating vacation bible schools, writing and directing church plays, and always lending a hand to someone in need. In the mid-1970's she expanded her ministry to children to include a growing Asian population. She became much loved by those she served. She also volunteered for several local charitable organizations. It would be a disservice to describe Lola without mention of the unwavering patriotism she felt for her country. She was immensely proud of her husband's service to his country during World War II and that both of her sons served in the Marine Corp. Further, she never missed serving on an election board over a span of 50+ years. Lola met her husband of 53 years, Marvin Christie, while he was working at Redbanks. They were married in 1941. Marvin passed away in 1994. Lola was preceded in death by her parents, George and Ethel Coffee and her brother, Findley Coffee. She is survived by five children; Judy Raessler of Prescott, Arizona; Kenneth Christie of San Jose, California; Joetta Chrissakis of Dallas, Oregon; Bobbi Hutchins of Tulare, CA; and Jeff Christie of Visalia, CA. She is also survived by her sisters, Frances Hauenstein of Kingsburg and Donna Symons of Badger. She was an amazing grandmother to her thirteen grandchildren and would spend hours with them tubing down the St. John River, playing games on her living room floor, or discovering and catching bugs and critters wherever they may be. She is also survived by twelve great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. Visitation 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Salser and Dillard Funeral Chapel, Visalia. Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, August 19, 2010, at Parkside Chapel, followed by a reception at the church. Burial at Visalia District Cemetery. The family requests any donations be directed to the missions fund at Parkside Chapel, 3200 East Walnut Ave., Visalia, CA. Condolences may be e-mailed to [email protected]

Your time to rest has come, mom. We all miss you and continue to carry on as we were taught. Thank you for all you taught us! Too many stories to cover here, so we'll take it up in the sweet bye and bye.

Lots of people to thank for making your last couple of years so special ... and I will, but Jack and Bobbie need to head that list.

Until we meet again, dear mother ... may God hold you close.

No matter where I've traveled in this world, somehow a letter from Lola always found it's way to me. She usually just put my first name, a stamp and the address, then always started her letters on page two !!! I always laughed so much !! She started on page two, as if the first letter never ended...In the past year, I visited with her several times a week, made mashed sweet potatoes, and homemade tomato soup( her favorite), and we spoke often of her passing into the presence of Our Father. I'm really glad we talked about that, I think perhaps it prepared both of us for just that time. I read to her Bible passages till she fell asleep, then I'd just sneak out...with us It was a joke, and we'd laugh. I was honored to have this woman who introduced me to Jesus as my close friend, and I am looking forward to the day we will stand in God's presence again as children of God. I will miss you my dear old friend...Carrie Lynn

In the early 50's, Lola and Marv let our family visit them often so we could watch their television. I remember Lola working on PTA projects with my mother at Carrie Barnett, Webster later at Green Acres. I also remember Lola and my mother leading a group of cub scouts and thought how lucky my little brother and his friends were to have those two as leaders.

I always appreciated the way she stood up for her spiritual beliefs and her beliefs in the United States of America and its' founding principles.

In these last years, I always looked forward to seeing her when I went to vote so that we could catch up.

One of the things I loved most about Lola was that she always had an idea about how to do something. Also that she never knew a stranger. She had a good heart and treated everyone the same in my eyes.

She was a very good woman that I will always remember. My condolences to Judy, Joetta, Bobby, Kenneth and Jeff and the rest of the family.

We lived across the street from Lola and Marv when we were first married. Our first child was born there and she always made it a point to have him come over and visit with all her animals on the property. We moved when I was pregnant again with triplets and she always made it a point to come visit whenever she was our way, not to mention letters and phone calls to make sure we were doing OK:).She was like a psuedo Grandma. The woman was incredibly funny and caring and she will be missed. Lola, I know your being the best neighbor to someone in heaven right now:) RIP!

Bye, Mom.
.
I hope your anticipated train-ride in the clouds went well and that you made it to the station where you imagined your beloved predecessors would be waiting for you. (You didn't catch the wrong train, did you?)
I hope that all of your favorable religious beliefs came true, that any fears you may have had were put to rest, and that all disappointments are forgotten. May you now rest, play, feast, sing, and enjoy peace and family reunion in a Paradise infinitely better than you ever imagined it would be.
Thanks for all of the good you did while you were here, and for the fond memories you left others and me with. Thanks for fighting all of those many good fights, and for your hawk-eyed looking out for what you thought was best for your kids.
Now that we know that you're as good as can be, maybe some of us can rest, too.
.
Signed,
