Mel Silva Obituary

Mel Silva, 76, passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2010. He was born in San Mateo on November 10, 1933, to Albert and Kathryn Silva. At birth, Mel was affectionately nicknamed "Skeez" by his sisters. Mel was raised in Visalia and graduated from Visalia Union High School in 1953. Upon graduating from high school, he joined the army and served two years. He completed his duty at Ford Hood Texas. After returning from serving in the military, he attended College of the Sequoias. While attending COS, Mel played baseball. He and his team won the state championship in 1957. The only time a COS team has ever won a state championship. It was also at COS where Mel met his future wife, Ruby Ellen. The couple married in San Francisco in 1958 and celebrated 49 years of marriage until Ruby Ellen passed away in 2007. After Mel attended COS, he went on to Fresno State University to continue his education but soon he signed with the Boston Red Sox to fulfill his lifelong dream. The couple returned to Visalia in the early 60's. Mel went to work as a lineman at Southern California Edison for over 25 years until he retired in 1990. Mel was an assistant baseball coach at COS from 1988-1993. He was also an assistant golf coach and chief recruiter at COS from 1996-2003. He had the innate ability to coach with "colorful" language and not be offensive. He always had the respect of all his athletes and was an outstanding coach. Mel's quick wit and dry sense of humor will forever be remembered by all. He is described by his family and friends as loyal, strong-willed, determined, and self-motivated. When Mel dressed up he always looked dapper and tan. When asked his opinion, you would get an honest answer even if you did not like what you were hearing. His true friends were his friends for life and could recognize his playful humor and cantankerous ways. Mel was always there when you needed him, in good times and in bad. His death will create a void in all our lives. We appreciate all you have given to us especially your landscaping and tree trimming tips. We love and will miss you forever "Skeez." Mel is survived by his daughter, Nonnie; his three sisters, Betty, Gerry, and Jean; his brother-in-law, Don; and nephews, niece and many beloved friends. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday January 29 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Visalia, with a celebration of life following the service. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the College of the Sequoias Foundation in memory of Mel, 915 South Mooney Blvd, Visalia, CA 93277. My dearest Mel, you will be so missed. I have countless memories of when I was over your house, playing with Nonnie. I pray that you're resting in peace. Nonnie, you have an extended with me, my parents and your many, many friends. We love you.

Nonnie and family, I am so sorry for your loss. My Dad and Mom also send their thoughts and prayers. Dad said he very much enjoyed working with your dad all those years at Edison and playing golf with him.
