Michael Islas Obituary

Michael Islas On Oct 26, 2014 our beloved Michael Islas left us to be with the lord after a hard fight with cancer. Michael was born in Cutler, CA on February 7, 1964. Upon graduating school he moved to Visalia, CA where he lived until 2009. He then moved to Kalispell where he married the love of his life Joan Copenhaver on October 14, 2009. Michael had a love for life, he was always smiling. He really enjoyed living in the Flathead and Montana. He would comment daily on the beauty and the clean air. He enjoyed telling bad jokes, blond ones especially! He was a wonderful chess player and would never let you win. Michael was a self proclaimed mad scientist. He loved taking things apart and putting them back together or finding new ways to do things. Christmas was one of his favorite times. He would spend all year looking for and designing his Christmas village named "Michaelville". He loved his job as an ice technician for the Ice House. He drove over the road truck for many years, which he also quite enjoyed. Michael is survived by his wife Joan Islas. Sons Michael Jr., Esteven and Jonathon Islas all of Visalia, CA. Mother Mary Islas of Orosi, CA. Stepdaughter April Walker, son-in-law Joe Vanzant of Columbia Falls, MT. Grandchildren Samantha and Madison Collins and Slyde and Nadalia Vanzant of Columbia Falls, MT. Three brothers, Desiderio Islas Jr. of Killeen, TX., David Islas of Orosi, CA. and Jamie Islas of Honolulu, HI. Many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces nephews and friends. A viewing will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014 from 9 AM until 12 Noon at Johnson Gloschat Funeral Home, Kalispell, MT. A funeral service for Michael will follow at 12 Noon Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the funeral home. Interment will be at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery. I met Michael back in 1994 when I was employed as a computer technician at College of the Sequoia. Michael was hired part time to assist students with computer issues. He became a great friend and we'd hang out after work quite a lot. I still have an old desk he gave me that he once used for his "mad scientist" projects! Unfortunately, we lost contact and I didn't learn of his death until a few years ago. I'm glad that Michael found some happiness in his life before his passing.

Farewell my friend.

The beauty of life is that it brings so many perspectives to a common world. Michael definitely brought a zest to ours. He always was willing to listen and ponder my thoughts and provide his own interpretation with conviction. Sometimes in common, sometimes differing, it was fun hearing his take. I especially appreciated his patience to details in modeling.
I still cherish the HO model railroad hoppers that he detailed for me. The work on the models was darn good. Even the manner he carefully packaged them with so much care further displayed his love for modeling and detail. I liked those hoppers so much that I only ran them once to preserve his work. Maybe one day I will have time to build that railroad again. Maybe then I can draw on that friendly sometimes sinister laugh to get inspired to detail and return to the simple things that brought good times and laughter to both of us. Hasta Luego Michael.
