Anne Collins Obituary

Anne Flagler Collins

Hanover, NH — Anne died on April 24, 2022. A believer in games, manners, high standards and a positive outlook, she was born on August 2, 1938 and grew up in Millbrook, NY with three brothers, dogs and cats. After graduating from Emma Willard School in Troy, NY, and Mills College in Oakland, CA, Anne went to work in the U.S. State Department. Having seen to the comforts of foreign dignitaries for two years, she decided to become a doctor. She graduated from Columbia's School of Physicians and Surgeons and went on to work in Sri Lanka, Brazil, Haiti, Nicaragua and Guatemala. She spent six weeks with the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Western Australia, doing an epidemiological study of the incidence of leprosy among the native population. In the late sixties she became engaged to an Australian journalist who was lost in Vietnam in 1970. She went on living, "spirited by memories of Tim."

While in Nicaragua Anne contracted near-fatal tropical sprue that challenged her health greatly from then on. She joked that she ended up a "true bionic woman, loaded with prosthetics and various metals." Indominable as ever, she became a pilot of small aircraft and float planes, and a para-skier until a photograph of her hang-gliding seen by her doctors at DHMC brought such activity to an end.

Anne retired after 30 years of medical practice. She lived at Kendal for nearly 20 years, driving about in her electric cart and managing the large glass display case.

Anne is survived by her brothers Farnham and Anthony Collins of Millbrook, NY and by seven nephews and nieces. A graveside service was held in Millbrook on May 2. Contributions in her memory may be made to Willing Hands, 198 Church St., Norwich, VT 05055.
