Archie Eastman Obituary

Archie L. Eastman

Enfield, NH — Archie Lynn Eastman, 92, passed away June 12, 2021, at The Village in WRJ, VT after a long and meaningful life. Archie was born July 27, 1928, in Somerville, MA to Archie W. and Viola (Jones) Eastman. He attended a one room schoolhouse in Orange, NH and graduated from Canaan High School in 1946. He enlisted in the USAF soon after graduation and was based in Fresno, CA. He continued serving in the Air Force Reserves for over 8 years after leaving active duty. He met his wife, Betty, after returning home to NH and they were married on December 1, 1951. Their 70th Anniversary would have been this year.

Archie's work life consisted of many different occupations, but for over 20 years he was Manager of Lakeside Oil Company. When Johnson and Dix bought out Lakeside, he continued on as a courier until his retirement. As someone who never wanted to be idle, he continued working as a painter through his 80's.

Archie belonged to many organizations. He was a member for many years of the Canaan Lions Club. He was a Mason and Shriner. He was on National Ski Patrol, an Elks member, and in this last year a member of The American Legion. He was especially proud of organizing the annual Canaan Lions Club Golf Tournament for many years. He also served as a volunteer firefighter and was a town elected selectman. It was in his nature to be involved and to serve his community.

Archie also had a passion for sports. He was a natural born competitor in anything he played from baseball, to golf, to ping pong, to cards. He played golf at 89, still with a competitive spirit, and parred a hole during his round. He was a lifelong Red Sox fan and also coached youth baseball. Throughout his life he supported his family and community on the sidelines, and you knew he was present when you would hear "Atta Go!"

He is survived by his wife, Betty Eastman; daughters, Debbie Eastman and Valerie (Jude) Dutille; grandchildren, Tiah (David) Cotoni, Chero (John) Thomas, Sarah (Alex) Tucker, Beau (Kara) Maville, Ross (Emily) Dutille, and Adam Dutille; 13 great grandchildren; sisters, Joyce (Bob) LaMott and Carol Decato; brothers, Dwight (Susan) Eastman and Dale (Kate) Eastman; sister-in-law, Priscilla Eastman; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, David Eastman; brother-in-law, Gleason Decato; and a grandson, Jake Maville.

Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Sunday, June 27, 2021, from 4-6:00 PM at Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon, NH. A graveside celebration of Archie's life will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, June 28, 2021, at Oak Grove Cemetery in Enfield, NH.

We miss Archie so much and will always remember his loyal friendship. He helped our family to maintain our beloved second home on Tuttle Hill Road for almost 40 years. When we would be there for our many visits and celebrations he would greet us with his ever present smile and often with a box of Dunkin’ donuts or muffins. He was always so proud of his many grandchildren and happy to share their adventures and accomplishments. Our sympathy and condolences to the whole family.

When I think of Archie, his wonderful smile immediately comes to mind. I always enjoyed running into him and having a visit. He was definitely a "people person." The Mascoma Valley has definitely lost an landmark.

An enjoyable man I was always happy to see and talk with. It was my pleasure to alert him to a lot available for purchase in North Village Community on Mascoma Lake. The Dutilles built here affording me to talk with Archie more often. A kind man who touched many leaving a happy memory for people after a meaningful encounter.
So glad all of you had so many years as his large family to now cherish your memories Peace To You, Sheila Brown

Betty, Debbie, Valerie and Family. I was so sorry to hear of Archie's passing.
My thoughts and prayers are with you. I saw Archie at the Alumni Reunion a few years ago.
He didn't look any older than he did when I lived in Canaan. He was a good man!

I'm so sorry to hear of Archie's passing, but I'll still smile to myself when I think of him. My condolences to everyone who loves him. Archie was a sweetheart -- hard-working, incredibly generous, and always with that smile of his, which was often mischievous. He was one of a kind, and he will be missed.
