David Barton Obituary

David Barton

Grantham, NH - David Ralph Barton (July 19, 1941 - February 15, 2025), age 83, of Belton, SC and Grantham, NH, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2025.

He was born in Lebanon, NH on July 19, 1941, the son of the late Donald and Leila (Sanborn) Barton. He was a devoted husband to his wife Jane for 52 years, a loving father, and affectionately known as "Papa" to his grandchildren, who he greatly adored.

David, the eldest of four siblings, was raised in Grantham, NH. He graduated from Lebanon Highschool (class of 1958) in a different time, having hitchhiked the 20 miles both ways to school. He was an immensely talented machinist and operated Blue Mountain Machine alongside Jane and his children for 30 years. He was a man of many passions that spanned hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, boating, crew chief for auto racing teams, and later in life, he acquired a deep passion for cycling. David was widely known as someone who could build or fix anything and was very generous with his time.

David and Jane split their time in retirement between summers in New Hampshire with family and winters in South Carolina where they quickly formed strong friendships in their community - owing in large part to David's noted ability to strike up a deep conversation with anyone.

He is survived by his wife Jane, children Mike and Michelle, four beautiful grandchildren, three siblings, and many nieces and nephews. David lived a life full of purpose and happiness. He will be dearly missed.

The family will host a memorial service at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the Latimer United Methodist Church in Belton, SC. A celebration of life will be held in NH on Saturday July 19, 2025.

I am so sorry for your loss Jane. My condolences to the entire family. Most of my projects around the house needed to be discussed with, or done by David. I was never comfortable taking on a task without him. I miss him so much. We had our differences for sure, but agreed to disagree. I most definitely valued his opinion and friendship. What a wonderful neighbor. I catch myself looking out the back door to see if he is around.
I know he is sitting at the right hand of God. May the Lord bless and keep him. One of our last conversations he told me he wished he had more time. I said if I could, I would give him a couple of years. You would make better use of them than I would. Did you know he showed me how to make my own dentures. What a man. May you rest in peace for ever and ever my dear friend.
