Dawn Oakes
Newport, NH - Dawn P. Oakes, 64, passed Friday evening, October 10, 2025, at the Jack Byrne Center in Lebanon, NH, after a sudden illness.
Dawn was born January 30, 1961, to Gloria E. (Rice) and Harold W. Oakes Jr., in San Antonio, Texas, where her father was stationed. After graduating from RHAM High School in Hebron, CT in 1979, she earned a Bachelor's of English degree from Eastern Connecticut State University.
The daughter of a librarian, Dawn loved to read. She also wrote stories and belonged to the writer's group through the Richards Free Library in Newport, NH.
Dawn was introduced to Lyle Frizzell by her mother, Gloria. The couple married July 15, 2006, in Enfield, NH.
Dawn taught Special Education in Barre and Montpelier schools and was a substitute teacher in Newport schools before her retirement.
Dawn was a member of Eastern Star and the Enfield Methodist Church.
Dawn loved sailing, boating, and anything you could do on the water. She also loved animals and took in many stray cats, dogs, rabbits, and ferrets. She kept sheep and goats for many years.
She played the French horn in the Upper Valley Community Band for many years and enjoyed trips to Boston to play concerts at Faneuil Hall with them. She traveled throughout Europe with the Connecticut Youth Ambassador Band in 1979. She also enjoyed singing and sang with the Upper Valley Choral Group and the All Area Christmas Choir in Newport.
Dawn is survived by her parents, Harold and Gloria Oakes of Enfield, NH; husband, Lyle Frizzell of Newport, NH; sister, Gloria Jean Oakes of Enfield, NH; parents-in-law, Everett and Margaret Frizzell of Stark, NH; sister-in-law, Lara Dowland, her husband, David, and their son, Quinn, all of Jaffrey, NH; and her beloved dog, Charlie.
Dawn was preceded in death by her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and brother-in-law, Mark VanHouten.
Family and friends are invited to a 2:00 P.M. graveside service on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at Hartford Village Cemetery, off Route 14, in Hartford, VT.
Memorial donations in Dawn's name may be made to the Upper Valley Humane Society.
