Douglas Almon Caney

Rapid City, SD — Douglas Almon Caney, 29, beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend died Saturday, September 17th 2022 with his family by his side at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital in Rapid City, South Dakota. Doug was born in Hanover, New Hampshire on February 16th 1993 to Leo Irving Caney Jr. and Kristy (Kristin) Wormelle. He graduated from Mascoma Valley Regional High School in Canaan, New Hampshire in December of 2011. Doug was predeceased by his brother Randy William Oakes Jr.

Doug was sworn into the United States Army on November 6th, 2012 and was assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry, 198th Infantry Brigade where he attended and completed 14 weeks of One Station Unit Training in Fort Benning, Georgia. Upon his completion, Doug was then assigned to Headquarters Troop of the 2nd Calvary Regiment located in Vilseck, Germany. In July of 2013, Doug deployed to Kandahar Province, Afghanistan taking part in Operation Enduring Freedom. He returned to Germany in December of 2013 where he was stationed in Apache Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment in Hohenfels, Germany where he served as a Rifleman. In September of 2016 Doug was promoted to team leader and worked as the organization's fire warden. He ultimately achieved the rank of Sergeant and assisted in training allied forces. At the end of his service he worked as an Income Tax Assistant and Hearing Technician. He achieved the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (3rd award), Army Good Conduct Medal (2nd award), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, and Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon.

Doug was honorably discharged from the United States Army in January 2020 and relocated to Rapid City, South Dakota where he enrolled at Western Dakota Technical Institute to study Automotive Technology and Computer Science.

Doug is survived by his father Leo Irving Caney Jr. and step-mother Lisa Caney of Nashua NH, his mother Kristy Wormelle of Enfield NH, his sister Krystal Caney and sister-in-law Theresa Caney of Boscawen NH, his brother Gage Oakes of Enfield NH, and his niece Serenity Oakes.

Doug was known as a kind, sweet, and gentle soul. He had a strong and beautiful heart. He was intelligent and determined. He had a one of a kind sense of humor and enjoyed jokes and laughter above all else. He had a special fondness for holidays and could always be counted on for a holiday card, call, or text. He enjoyed Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, horror movies, and hockey. He leaves behind family, friends, and classmates who loved and adored him dearly. He will be sorely missed by all those who knew him.

A funeral service will be held at Phaneuf Funeral Home at 172 King Street, Boscawen, New Hampshire 03303 on Saturday, October 1st 2022 from 11:00am to 1:00pm.

Memories of Doug in diapers playing in his football toy box easily come to mind. He was a kind soul that was eager to share his most prized possessions. He would climb inside it and tip the whole thing over so that he was sure to find a toy you would like. May he rest in peace.
