Ephraim Shulman

Lebanon, NH - Ephraim Shulman, DDS, died at his home at the Woodlands, an Independent Living Facility in Lebanon NH on Jan 22, 2025. Prior to moving to Lebanon, he and his wife were residents in Boston, MA, Naples, FL, plus a home in Quechee, VT for some 37 years.

Although he was challenged by Parkinson's Disease for the last 17 years, Eph lived life to the fullest. He and his wife, Helen, traveled extensively. He was an avid fly fisher, ballroom dancer, player of six wicket croquet, an extraordinary husband, and friend.

Eph was known for his gentle, generous, kind, and thoughtful nature. He was able to help people reframe the things that disturbed them, providing new perspectives and fresh insights.

He was born in Bayonne, NJ to Charles and Florence Epstein Shulman on Jan 16, 1944. Florence died the day after he was born. Charles returned to his military duties in India the following week. Eph's grandparents, Sydney and Rose Epstein cared for him until his father returned from the war.

Charles later married Norma Gerber who adopted Eph and became his mother. Norma had a daughter, Susan, and the couple had another child, Ivy. The family lived in Tottenville on Staten Island, NY where Charles practiced dentistry.

Eph was a quiet, inquisitive, introspective child. He particularly enjoyed being a boy scout and he used the skills he acquired as a scout throughout his life.

He attended Tottenville High School, University of Pennsylvania for his undergraduate studies, Columbia Dental School where he was awarded his DDS and Boston University for post graduate work. He was a prosthodontist, specializing in crowns, bridges and restorative dentistry. His practice was in Lynn, MA. Clem Schoenebeck and Don Mori were partners.

Eph loved to learn. He also loved to teach. His patience and joy at sharing knowledge and skills endeared him to many a willing student.

Eph and Helen loved collecting art. They bought paintings and sculptures on their trips and many works from shows at AVA Gallery and Art Center here in Lebanon. AVA played an important part in the lives of both Eph and Helen.

Generally serious, he also repeatedly managed to insert hilarious comments into almost any conversation.

He was charming and elegant. What a treat it was to know him! He was a true gentleman.

He is survived by his wife, Helen (Shadduck) Shulman, his sister Susan Henry, his sister Ivy Hurwitz and her husband Bill Hurwitz and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law John and Mary Lou Shadduck, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

His parents predeceased him.

He will be buried in a private ceremony in Lebanon N.H.
