Rev. J. Alan McLean, 90, of Covenant Village Cromwell, CT, husband of the late Joan (Marshall) McLean, passed away Sunday (April 28, 2024) at New London Hospital in New London, NH. Born in Ayer, MA, son of the late Dr. Joseph McLean and Caroline (Hopkins) McLean, he was raised in Ayer, lived in New Britain, CT for 45 years, and was also a former resident of New London, NH. A graduate of Amherst College, in 1955, he received his Masters of Divinity from Yale University and later a Masters of Sacred Theology from Hartford Seminary. Alan served Pilgrim Memorial Church in Pittsfield, MA, South Church in New Britain, CT, and for 20 years served at the First Church of Christ UCC in Hartford. He later taught at Hartford Seminary. Alan served on the board of United Church of Christ (UCC) for World Ministries; was a member of the Board of Trustees of Hartford Seminary; and also served on the Board of Bushnell Park Foundation in Hartford and the Board of First Night Hartford.
Surviving are four children, Marshall McLean and his partner Alicia of Concord, MA, Kathy McLean Mathias and her husband Jim of New London, NH, Amy McLean Salls of Tariffville, CT, and David McLean of New Britain, CT; seven grandchildren, Matthew (Ali), Laney, Tucker (Rebecca), Luke, Benjamin, Charlotte, and Rose; one great grandchild, Miro; several nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law, Glenn Dorr of Concord, MA, and a sister-in-law, Ursula McLean of Media, PA. Alan was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Joan, and by two brothers, Dr. Marshall McLean and Dr. Robert McLean, and a sister, Anne (McLean) Dorr.
A memorial service will be held at the First Church of Christ (Center Church), 675 Main Street, Hartford, CT, on Saturday, June 1, at 11 a.m. There are no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alan's memory to the First Church of Christ and designated for the 1636 Heritage Project, with which Alan was deeply involved for many years up to the time of his death.
