Jo Ann Harper

White River Junction, VT - Jo Ann Harper, 81, died on Sunday, June 16, 2024, in White River Junction, VT.

Josie was born March 25, 1943, to the late Thomas and Mildred (Fromal) Salusto in Chester, PA. She grew up and attended school in Chester and excelled in athletics including field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse. She attended West Chester University where she received her bachelor's degree in education and played on the lacrosse team all four years.

After college she began teaching at Swarthmore High School where she also began her career in coaching. She later coached field hockey, basketball and lacrosse at Penncrest High School in Media, PA and then moved to the collegiate level, coaching lacrosse at Hollins College in Roanoke, VA. Josie joined the Dartmouth athletics staff in 1981 when she was hired as the women's lacrosse head coach. She led the team to the NCAA tournament in 1983, to its first Ivy League Championship in 1986 and again in 1987, and the ECAC Championship in 1988. Harper also served as assistant coach of the US Women's National Team including in the 1982 team that won the World Championship in England and as the head coach of the 1986 World Cup Team.

After coaching, Jo Ann moved into athletic administration at Dartmouth. She was named National Association of College Women Athletic Administrators administrator of the year in 2000. Harper was named Director of Athletics and Recreation at Dartmouth in 2002, the first time a woman earned such a high-ranking position in the history of the Ivy League. She also received the Katherine Ley Award from the ECAC in recognition of her leadership and advocacy for women coaches and administrators.

In 2020 it was announced the women's lacrosse head coach at Dartmouth would be endowed in Josie Harper's name. Some of her many other accolades include induction into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, as well as the Lacrosse Halls of Fame in New England and Pennsylvania and the West Chester University Athletic Hall of Fame.

No remembrance of Josie's life would be complete without acknowledge of her late beloved spouse, Michelle. They built a beautiful life together and were an extraordinary couple. I know Josie was devastated by her loss and Josie's steadfast and years-long commitment to fundraising for cancer research was driven in memory of Michelle. We will continue to honor them both.

Josie gave her heart and soul to her teams and to each and every athlete she came in touch with. We coached Dartmouth Field Hockey together/ selected a US Lacrosse Team together/ and bumped into each other at many NCAA events. I loved her wit, honesty, and a strong conviction to do the right thing. RIP Josie - you were a legend in College
Athletics!

I had Josie as a coach for 3 sports and 3 seasons for each- looking back, in some ways even more than my parents she had the strongest impact of what I am personally most proud of, as a person...There is only one Josie- she is a trailblazer and led by example and gave so much to all of us through her coaching. Cheers with my heart to Josie! Duff- penncrest class of 74

I am sad for your loss. I played basketball under Josie at Penncrest. After senior season (1972) she gave me a gold initial bracelet that I still have, wear, and treasure. She was a great, supportive, and encouraging teacher. Didn´t realize she was barely older than her students. Also didn´t know what accomplishments had followed. I also acknowledge her as an understated role model in other areas. Thanks for a life well- lived.

Was so shocked to hear of our dear cousin Josie. She was such an awesome person and I was so proud to be related to her.She and her sister Connie were the daughters of my Mom´s brother, our Uncle Tommy whom me and my siblings adored growing up in Media. We always had such fun when we were all together. I always had hoped we could have gotten together with her and Connie but distance and time prevented us from doing so. RIP Jo and rest easy with Unc Tommy,Aunt Mildred and Connie. You left an awesome legacy in the collegiate world. Cousin Sandy
