Maxine Slack Obituary

Maxine Jane Slack

South Corinth, VT - Maxine Slack died peacefully at home on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. The second daughter of the late Willard (Bill) and Eleanor Brainerd, she was born at home on June 10, 1938, delivered by Dr. Dwinnell, who was paid for his services with a sack of potatoes!

Maxine attended grade school in East Corinth and graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre. She then enrolled in the MHMH Nursing Program, where she received her LPN certification. She married Gregory A. Slack on September 28, 1958. The couple embarked on a lifetime of dairy farming in South Corinth, in addition to her work at Cottage Hospital, Dr. Kenneth Murdock, Jr's Medical Office and later at Stonecliff Animal Clinic. Maxine also enjoyed many years of service at Upper Valley Pediatrics and had the privilege of getting to know scores of area families through her many, kind efforts.

Never one to lay idle, Maxine was also an avid knitter, as her many friends and extended family members remember fondly. Her talents were so well-known that she was honored to have knitted the Dartmouth College Marching Band sweaters for twenty-three years; in addition to countless gifts to those she loved.

Maxine's greatest joy in life, however, was her family. Though she was predeceased by her parents, by her husband in 2006, and a sister in 2023, she is survived by three children: Kimberly S. Dusenbury (Peter), Jeffrey Slack (Judy) and Stephen Slack (Grace Zambon). In addition, she leaves grandchildren Jillian Wilder (Tim), Travis Dusenbury, Jessica Osgood, Megan Slack (Brandon F.) Samantha LeNoir (Joel) Alexandra Slack and fiancé George Ma, Elizabeth Bogie and her friend Anthony Derosia. She also leaves great-grandchildren Brooke Osgood and Faith Osgood, and Quinn Wilder. She is also survived by sisters, Diane Drewes of Stamford, CT and Sabra Wood (Jerry) of O'Fallon, MO; a brother, Roger Martin (Cathy) of E. Corinth, VT and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also especially close to her nephew, Andrew Martin, who had lived with the Slacks on their farm for fifteen years.

Maxine especially wanted to thank those who had helped her so much through the past year, namely Melissa Tatro, Amy Carruthers, June Danforth and Dicky and Marilyn Covey.

Donations to the East Corinth Congregational Church or to CHaD at 1 Medical Center Dr, Lebanon, NH 03766, in her memory would be gratefully appreciated.

A celebration of life gathering will be held on November 1, 2025 from 1-3pm at the Cookville Town Hall.

The Boardway and Cilley Funeral Home, Chelsea, VT is assisting with arrangements. A private message of sympathy can be shared with the family at www.boardwayandcilley.com.

Yesterday

To all family members: Maxine will leave a hole. Her smile and laugh will be missed. She was so faithful in taking Mom to church at Mark´s church and visiting her at Margaret Pratt Assisted Living. She and Mom are getting caught up on all the news I know. With sadness.
