Robert Hallisey Obituary

Robert "Bob" Hallisey, Sr.

New London, NH - Robert "Bob" M. Hallisey, Sr. died peacefully in his home on January 20, 2024 at the age of 87 after battling the same leukemia that took his wife a decade before.

Bob was born 11/21/1936 in Cambridge, MA to John J. and Margaret M. (Sullivan) Hallisey in their home on Athens St. He was a Boston College double eagle and earned his Masters of Public Health at UMass Amherst.

He then married Margaret Anne "Peggy" Savage in 1961 and became a commissioned officer in the Public Health Service where they were initially stationed in Bethesda, MD. He served for twenty years retiring with the rank of Captain. The couple welcomed three children into their home in Winchester, MA over the next decade. Bob served as the state Director of Radiation Control for 22 years for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He taught medical radiological safety for many years at Tufts University. Bob retired in 2003 and he and Peg lived in Newbury before resettling to New London.

His children will remember him as a kind, gentle and engaged parent and grandparent who was focused on giving his loved ones the best opportunities. He was generous to a fault, very social and truly loved people. He had a passion for entertaining, singing, cooking and volunteering his time to help people. Bob was an active and dedicated member of Winchester's Glee Club, Staff & Key, and St. Mary's choir. During his retirement volunteered countless hours at New London Hospital, Historical Society and driving others to medical appointments for the Kearsage Area Council on Age. He was well known for his smile, genuine caring and keen memory for names.

Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife Peggy more than a decade ago by the same acute myeloid leukemia disease. He was a one woman man and looked forward to being reunited with her in peace and health. He was also predeceased by four of his siblings: Jacqueline Grondin, Larry, Barbara Murphy and John, Jr "Buddy".

He is survived by his three children Robert, Jr, Barbara and Chris, their spouses and two much loved grandchildren John and Megan Hallisey, and by three remaining siblings: Margaret DiRoma, Maureen Frisoli and William "Bill" Hallisey.

His children are planning a celebration of life event in the spring and welcome all to attend and reminisce on the wonderful life and person he was. He made friends everywhere and brightened many lives.

Bob was a wonderful Boss during my time working at the Radiation Control Program. He entrusted me with many challenging tasks and he was always the busiest and hard working in the team. Massachusetts was lucky to have had him as was I. God´s speed Bob & family.

To the family of Robert Hallisey I offer my sincere condolences for the passing of your father. My first job in health physics in 1975 was on a contract with MA Radiation Control and Bob´s FDA office to do surveys of new medical X-ray machines. Bob was an excellent teacher and manager. Bob and the original MA Rad Control Program provided a great jump start to my career in Health Physics for the next 40 years. Thank you Bob! Francis "Skip" Roy.

Robert, Barbara and Chris, please accept my condolences upon the death of your father. I worked for, and with, Bob since 1975. He was a friend and mentor early in my career and later, a trusted colleague in the field of health physics. He will be sorely missed.

We have lost such a wonderful, kind, thoughtful man. Bob was a wonderful front desk volunteer at New London hospital for many years, always welcoming patients and visitors with a boisterous "good morning, or afternoon" . I have missed him tremendously. To the family, you were privileged to have such a wonderful father. Hold on to the loving memories you have. My thoughts are with you during this sad time.
