Thomas Kent Obituary

Thomas Kent

Lebanon, NH - Thomas Warren Kent died on June 4, 2025 at the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care in Lebanon, NH following a prolonged illness.

Tom was born July 14, 1950 in Granby, MA, the second son of Charles and Carol Kent. He graduated from Granby High School in 1968, Dartmouth College in 1972, and the Thayer School of Engineering in 1975. His time at Dartmouth was a source of treasured memories and lifelong friendships, about which he always delighted in reminiscing.

Tom settled in Lyme, NH with his wife Janet, where they raised three daughters and where he lived for more than 25 years. Constitutionally incapable of sitting still, Tom's professional pursuits brought him from the oil fields of Kuwait to the forests of Russia and many places in between. Though he was an adventurer at heart and an avid world traveler Tom always loved coming home to River Road, which he considered one of the most special places on earth. There was nothing like a summer in Lyme, he often said: he spent them swimming and water skiing in the Connecticut River and cruising the Upper Valley in his beloved convertible, very often barefoot and dressed in a pair of cut-off jean shorts (much to the mortification of his daughters).

Tom is predeceased by his wife Janet (d. 2000) and survived by his daughters Rose, Hazel, and Kim, and soon-to-be six grandchildren. He will be buried next to Janet at the Highland Cemetery in Lyme later this summer.

Tom and I were College Classmates and lived down the hall from each other in Woodward Hall for at least our first two years at Dartmouth. I particularly remember his involvement with the Dartmouth Outing Club and his love for the outdoors. My condolences to his family.

Tom and I were best friends growing up in Granby in the 1950s. We lived in the same neighborhood, I was born just 11 days after him, our mothers were best friends and named us both Tom, so it was inevitable that we would spend a lot of time together, especially in the summer, exploring our surroundings on foot or on our bicycles, in our uniform of bare feet and a pair of shorts. Our friendship continued into the early 1960s, but as time went on our interests and our paths in life diverged, and after he went to Dartmouth and afterwards stayed up in New Hampshire, I saw him only rarely. Still, my memories of our childhood are strong, and I am very sad to hear of his passing. He was a big influence on my life very early on.
