William Richard Hugg

Chelsea, VT - William Richard Hugg (Bill), 83, joined his wife Virginia Odell Hugg in Heaven on June 8, 2024, he was at home with his daughter/caregiver Valerie Hugg by his side at their home in Chelsea, Vermont. He was born on September 27, 1940, in Orange, Sussex, New Jersey, to Harvey Hugg and Mildred Ann Hugg (Conklin). He is survived by his daughter (from his first marriage) Susan Drennen & husband Micheal Drennen of New Jersey & their two children (Rachel & Clay), also his children from his second marriage; his daughter Jennifer Lee Marden & husband Shannon Marden of Brownsville, VT their children (Alisha & Nathan), his daughter Jessica Anne Gould of Orford, NH & her children (Zachery, Joshua, & Alice), his son Andrew William Hugg of Charlestown, NH & his three children (Willey, Wyatt, & Lydia), & his youngest daughter/full time caretaker, & best friend Valerie Marie Hugg of Chelsea, VT. He also leaves behind his cousin Earl Conklin in New Jersey, and three great-grandsons from Alisha Marden, his two brother in-laws Jeff Odell, Cole Odell sister in-laws Linda Odell & Jean Odell along with various nieces & nephews. Last, but certainly not least he leaves behind his beloved and faithful dog Spike.

Bill was best known for his passion for the outdoors, his great sense of humor, his kind nature & big heart, his honesty, and his amazing strength in fighting his over 10-year battle with various serious health issues. No matter what he faced with his health and family in the past 13 years or more you could always expect to find him laughing with his daughter Valerie, he had such a love of life and there was still so much he wanted to do. Over the years of treatments, he and his daughter developed a deep appreciation for his care tea, at the WRJ VA. He proudly served in the Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp Lejeune, inevitably drinking the water that led to many of his illnesses. He grew up in West Orange, NJ. After he graduated school and some various jobs, he joined the Marine Corps. Later, after meeting his second wife and marrying they moved from New Jersey to Wyoming & then went to Vermont eventually settling down in Windsor, VT where they would start their family. He took a job with the Windsor prison, quickly moving through the ranks and eventually retiring in 1996 as Chief of Security at the Southeast State Correctional Facility. He also helped teach hunters' safety at the Windsor Coon Club. He had various interests and hobbies most of which were outdoors. He had a lot that he taught and did with his children. Sometimes he and his wife would load up their kids into their canoe and paddle around stopping on one of the small islands in the Connecticut River for picnics.

In his later years he enjoyed spending time with his daughter Valerie, her boyfriend Mike Chapin, who also helped care for him, and Spike.

The service will be handled by Boardway & Cilley Inc funeral home of Chelsea, Vermont, and will be at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery where his wife and his ashes will be laid to rest together. The date and time for this will be announced at a later date.
