William Shambo Obituary

William A. 'Bill' Shambo

White River Jct., VT - William Shambo, 90 passed peacefully at home on Thursday, September 21, 2023, with his loving children by his side. For the past 3 years, he fought a courageous battle with chronic kidney disease. His kidney disease was brought on by diabetes, which led to dialysis and hospice.

He was born, November 5, 1932, in Montpelier, VT and was the second of four children born to Rockwood H. and Evelyn (Adams) Shambo. He attended the Houghton School in Northfield, VT and the St. Johnsbury Academy in Saint Johnsbury, VT. Upon finishing school, he joined the Army and served with the 5th regimental combat team in the Korean war and with the 47th infantry division in Alabama. After having served several years in the Army, his rank was Sergeant first Class.

While home on leave, he met Phyllis Macy and they dated until his service was completed.

On his way home, the military plane in which he was a passenger caught fire and had to make an emergency landing in a wheat field in Mile City, Montana. All belongings and discharge papers were lost in the fire. Due to this life altering experience, Bill never boarded another plane and refused to fly.

After having served his country, Bill came back to Vermont to wed Phyllis Macy on August 18, 1957. They made their home in Wilder, VT where they purchased their first home and lived there until 1989. Then they found their forever home on Jericho Street in Hartford, VT. He loved working on the property.

Bill worked for Miller Auto in WRJ., VT in the parts department and then went on to Kibby Equipment. He worked for Kibby Equipment for 60 years starting as a salesperson and ending up as the owner until the business closed in 2017 due to health reasons.

When Bill wasn't working at Kibby Equipment, he was always working on a "project" at home. He was not known to be man that just sat around. He always had to be working doing something. With the many projects at home, he had to have the toys/equipment necessary. One could usually find him on his Kubota tractor, backhoe or working in his sawmill.

Bill and Phyllis enjoyed playing cards with friends and family throughout the years. He enjoyed watching the wildlife, taking Sunday rides, apple and blueberry picking, watching NASCAR and boxing on television, and listening to Country and Western music.

Bill was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Phyllis, his brothers, Edward, Rockwood, Jr., and Ronald, and his grandson, Colby Shambo. He leaves behind his children, Sue Ellen and Bill both of Wilder, VT; a grandson, Ryan Gunzinger of Turner, Maine and great grandchildren, Daigan and Daphne Gunzinger, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the dialysis team at Fresenius Kidney Care Center in Lebanon, NH and the Bayada Hospice care team for the care and compassion that was shown during his final days.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 29th at 11:00 a.m. at the Greater Hartford United Church of Christ in Hartford, Vermont. Burial will held at a later date.

Our sincere condolences to Sue and Billy. My wife Erica and I were blessed with the opportunity to reunite with Uncle Bill in June 2023 which I will treasure. We had a priceless reunion which was shared with other Shambo family members back in Ca. via FaceTime. I honestly didn´t know my uncle that well but have much respect and love for him. Please say "Hi" to my dad and uncle Ron. Good bless and RIP
Love ,
Edward Jr
