Verona Bordok Obituary

Verona Bordok
Verona M. Bordok died peacefully during the evening of July, 13, 2008. She was 87 years old, born in Sandstone, West Virginia, on April 6, 1921. She was raised by her grandmother and loving family in the West Virginia hills overlooking the New River. Always outgoing, athletic and full of life she was proud of being named "The 4-H Most Healthy Girl in West Virginia." Following graduation from Sandstone High School at the age of 15, she attended West Virginia Institute of Technology and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Concord College.
In 1940, while at West Virginia Tech, she met and married Louis Bordok which began 61 years of love, sharing and caring for each other and those whose lives they touched. Verona and Lou taught school in West Virginia until 1953 when they moved to Barstow, to take teaching positions in one of the few school districts in the state that would permit husbands and wives to teach in the same district. What was planned to be a one year stop en route to the California coast, turned into 55 years of service, friendships, and enjoyment on the High Desert.
Beginning as a teacher at Barstow Jr. High School, Verona transferred to Barstow High School where she taught physical education and sponsored the cheerleaders. After earning a Master of Arts Degree in Guidance from California State University, Los Angeles, she began a long career of high school guidance counseling and administration. During her tenure, Verona was the Dean of Girls at Barstow High School, Vice Principal at John F. Kennedy High School, Vice Principal and ultimately the Principal of Barstow High School, a position she held until her retirement. Verona touched the lives of generations of High Desert residents in a positive manner both at school and throughout the community.
In addition to her professional contributions, Verona was very involved with Altrusa International, a professional women's service club. Starting with the formation of a Barstow Chapter Altrusa, she rose to the organization's highest position of International President. She traveled the world representing Altrusa and its services, including the promotion of world literacy. As International President, she met with persons of influence in service, business and politics and was always proud that she was foremost representing the small chapter and the community of Barstow. She and Lou often entertained these friends from around the world in their home introducing them to their friends and beauty the of desert living.
She was preceded in death by her husband Louis; and sister Vivian Hutchinson. Survivors include brothers, Vince and Vance Meadows; son Jeff; daughter-in-law Barbara; grandsons, Preston, Trenton, and Jeffrey; and great-grandson, Brennan.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 19 at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, 220 N. Second Ave.

Verona will be missed by many friends in Altrusa District Fifteen, in New Zealand. As International President, she installed our first District Board in Wellington in 1985. She gave me as Governor in 2003-2005 her sage advice and friendship.A true spirit sorely missed.

Verona was the International Rep at the first District Six conference I went to in 1979. She was so friendly and gracious, I'll always remember how welcoming she was to a new Altrusan. She was that way every time I saw her. Please accept my sincere condolences for you loss. Verona will be greatly missed by you her family and her Altrusa family.

Verona set the example and standard of an Altrusan. She was elegant and had a wonderful sense of humor. As well as a good soul......she will be missed.

I was privileged to serve as Verona's legal advisor while she was President of Altrusa International and thus we become friends. There are so many stories and so many memories of laughter and good times together. She once said that she hoped she would survive Louie because she couldn't imagine him going on without her. I think she was right. Now they are together again, with their good friend Norma Jean Najim, and no doubt the laughter continues.

Verona was a beautiful and gracious lady. She was my friend and inspiration for thirty-nine of my forty-four years as an Altrusan. Altrusa was fortunate to have her as our ambassador to the world and she will be missed and remembered always.

Condolences to the Bordok family. Her Altrusa family will also miss her. She was a gracious lady and did much to further the aims of Altrusa--service and literacy. We Altrusans of District Six recently lost one of our own Past International Presidents - Norma Jean Najim. It is sad to lose two PIP's in a few months. The present governor of District Six.

She was always special as my teacher, and always available and helpful as my counselor. Verona was a driving force in the lives of many students attending Barstow High School. Her legacy will live on as we continue our life journey.

Mrs. Bordok was the principle when I was at Barstow High in 1983. Mr. Bordok was my drivers ed teacher a few years before. My mom and Verona had a special friendship. My mom (Betty Boyce) always loved Verona and was "always" going to have lunch together. My mom passed away in 2005. They will now enjoy each other's company in heaven. God bless the family.

All my love

Charlene Boyce Ray... Class of 1983 Barstow High School.

Verona was a very special lady. She will always hold a place in my heart. She had a lot of strength in her, and a lot of love and joy. Her spirit will always remain with all that knew her ... she'll never be far. She'll be in the laughter we hear, in the smile we see, in the love we feel.
