Dempsey Chapman Obituary

Dempsey Whitlow Chapman, 90, of Waco, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2012, at a local care facility. The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, May 17, at Connally-Compton. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, at Connally-Compton Funeral Directors.

Dempsey was born Aug. 19, 1921, in Kosse, Texas, to Ben B. Whitlow and Nora Ella Webster. She was the youngest of seven children and graduated from Kosse High School in 1940. In July of 1942, Dempsey met Robert E. Chapman and married him three weeks later on Aug. 1, 1942, in Abilene, Texas. They were devoted to one another and would have celebrated 70 years of marriage this coming August.

Mrs. Chapman was happy to be a wife, mother and homemaker. Baking was one of her passions, and in 1969, she attempted to enter the Pillsbury Bake Off contest. Her family will miss her holiday pies, especially the chocolate. Hospitality was important to Dempsey and she was always anxious for her guests to be comfortable. She was a member of Beverly Hills Baptist Church at the time of her death. Formerly Mrs. Chapman attended Kendrick Lane Baptist Church where she taught children's Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.

Dempsey was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Chapman on Jan. 13, 2012; daughter, Karen Sue Chapman; brothers, T.B. Whitlow, G.M. Whitlow, and Woodrow W. Whitlow; and sisters, Hattie Bell Whitlow, Mabel L. Thompson and Rita M. Whitlow.

Dempsey is survived by her son, Robert E. Chapman Jr. and wife, Sandra, of Hewitt; granddaughters, Amanda E. Sutherland and husband, Richie, of Vancouver, Wash., and Amy L. Chapman of Waco; great-grandchildren, Ethan R. Chapman of Waco, and Ella E. Sutherland of Vancouver, Wash.; nieces, Jane Brewer of Virginia Beach, Va., Peggy Acker of Mesquite, Texas, Linda Hall of Taylor, Texas, Barbara Jackson of Mesquite, Texas, and Sandra English of Forney, Texas; nephews, Jack Whitlow of Virginia Beach, Va., David W. Whitlow of Lorena, and Gary W. Whitlow of Waco; and various grand-nieces and nephews.

To the family of Dempsey Chapman: I am so incredibly sorry for your loss, I only cared for your mom for a short time, but I will forever, hold a special place in my heart for her. May God Bless you and your family. Dempsey is now with her husbnad, where hopefully she will forever be happy and no longer fighting Alzheimer's disease.

Bob and Sandy....our love and prayers are with you in the loss of your mother. We know she was a special lady who passed on her love of Christ, of home, and of family. We will be with you in spirit, and regret our schedules will prevent our being with you for the visitation and service. Blessings, and may you know the presence and peace of Christ.
