Elizabeth McWilliams Obituary

Elizabeth "Liz" Hunter McWilliams, age 98, went to be with her Lord on August 6, 2025. A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, August 23 at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church in the Sanctuary. After the service family members will remain at the front of the Sanctuary for visitation.

Liz was a Georgia peach, born on April 20, 1927 in LaGrange, Georgia to Emma and Gordon Hunter. She was the youngest of eight children- four girls and four boys. She grew up in LaGrange and graduated from Gray Hill School in West Point, GA.

While living in Atlanta, she met a "stalker" from Texas who was stationed in Columbus with the FBI. She ended up marrying Tommy on February 9, 1952, in Houston. Shortly after, they moved to Waco to begin her life as the mother of Betty, Lloyd, and later, Gary when he came along.

Besides being the mother of three, Liz was involved with March of Dimes, Cub Scouts and, along with Tommy, was a Sunday school teacher and Department Director for the Young Married Couples at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church. She was an avid bridge and gin player at Ridgewood Country Club where she made lasting friends. Liz was a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church for over 73 years where she was a member of the Mixon Sunday school class.

Liz was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy and her daughter, Betty. She is survived by her son Lloyd and daughter-in-law Nancy of Dallas; and son Gary and daughter-in-law Janice of Waco. Liz was the proudest "mamaw" to Michelle, Scott, Ashley and Andrea; and great-grandmother to twelve more. She was also the aunt to so many of her Georgia rooted nieces, nephews and cousins whom she dearly loved despite the distance from home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Waco Founder Lions Club Foundation at 1716 N. 42nd, Waco, TX 76710 or to Pathway to Victory, 1707 San Jacinto St., Dallas, TX 75201. Please reference memorials for Elizabeth McWilliams.

Our aunt Liz was certainly a jewel. She blessed all of our lives and truly let us know how much she loved us. We´ll miss her a lot.

Really going to miss this sweet soul who loved all of her extended family as she did her own children. My precious Aunt Liz will be missed greatly; but, as she always said, we will all be together again for an eternity. See you "in the morning."

Gary and Lloyd, I will greatly miss the phone calls from your mom. She was so caring, nurturing and genuinely concerned. She definitely loved her family and was so proud. I know she is welcomed by her sister and Tommy, and definitely her crown will have many stones. I am praying for all the family for the void left in your lives as well as many others. She is definitely in a much better place! Sincerely, Sharon Whitley
