Gregory McCoy Obituary

SSG Gregory McCoy, 26, of Riesel, Texas, died from injuries sustained while serving his country in Baghdad, Iraq, on Nov. 9, 2006. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 20, at Acts Christian Fellowship, 5201 Steinbeck Bend. A motorcycle procession led by Patriot Guard Riders will escort SSG McCoy to his interment with full Army Military Honors at 1 p.m. at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 11463 State Highway 195, Killeen. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque. Greg was born Feb. 9, 1980, in Lansing, Mich., to Timothy and Carol McCoy, and was raised in Webberville, Mich. Upon completing high school, Greg entered the United States Army. He attended basic training at Fort Jackson, Miss. and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Knox, Ky., where he trained to be a Bradley Fighting Vehicle Mechanic. His first duty was Fort Hood where he was assigned to the 2-20th Field Artillery, 4th Infantry Division. There he met his wife, Lori Smith, of Riesel, Texas. They married Dec. 10, 1999, in Waco, and welcomed their first child, Logan Reilly, July 29, 2000. On Sept. 23, 2003, in Landstuhl, Germany, Greg and Lori were blessed with their second son, Tyler Mason. The 230th Military Police Company deployed in March of 2004, for Operation Iraqi Freedom. While downrange, Greg re-enlisted. Upon his safe return to Germany, he and his family reported back to Fort Hood, where he was assigned to the 410th Military Police Company, 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade. It was with this unit, in June 2006, that Greg returned to Iraq for his second deployment. Greg and a fellow soldier were killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle in Baghdad. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, William McCoy. Survivors include his wife, Lori McCoy, of Riesel, Texas; sons, Logan Reilly and Tyler Mason, of Riesel, Texas; parents, Timothy McCoy and Christine Ferris, of Lansing, Mich. and Robert and Carol Johnson of Howell, Mich.; sister, Michelle Potchynok and husband, Jim of Webberville, Mich.; stepbrother, Eric Johnson of Howell, Mich.; stepsister, Christina Dobroczynski and husband, Dan of Conn.; paternal grandmother, Doris McCoy of Williamston, Mich.; maternal grandparents, George and Dortha Monroe of Fowlerville, Mich.; uncles, Dan McCoy and wife, Mary of Perry, Mich., Nelson Monroe and wife, Marie, of Lansing, Mich., and Dennis Monroe of Fowlerville, Mich.; aunts, Karen Jacobs and husband, Dennis of East Lansing, Mich. and Pam McCoy and Bill Zimmerman of Williamston, Mich.; father and mother-in-law, Jerry and Gena Smith of Riesel, Texas; sisters-in-law, Tracy Hendley of Lorena, Texas and Katie Smith of Riesel, Texas; brother-in-law, Cody Smith and wife, Emily of College Station, Texas; nephews, Tanner Smith and Cayson Hendley, of Lorena, Texas; nieces, Krystlina Potchynok of Webberville, Mich. and Katie Dobroczynski of Conn.; and many cousins. Happy birthday son.
You are 29 today.I wish that we could celebrate together.
We miss you, your laugh and your sense of humor.
I am sure that your sister wishes you were here to torment her. You were always good at that.
I will celebrate your birthday by enjoying my freedom.
Freedom that has been given to us by those willing to give their lives. For generation our young men and women have fought to keep the United States of America free.
I took my freedom for granted. After all it is something I have always had. Since that day when they knocked on the door
( 11-09-06) I have learned what the cost of freedom can be. You, like many others also know what freedom is. You and many like you have been willing to put your lives on the line so people from other countries may have a chance to enjoy what we have. FREEDOM.

I miss you son

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Gregory, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Nephew Greg,
We know you have the Internet in Heaven, so you'll read this.

You'll be glad to know your Grandfather George was selected as 2008 Livingston County Veteran of the Year and will be the Grand Marshall for the Fowlerville 4th. of July Parade.

I know this parade means a lot to you, as you've marched with your Grandfather in it.

You will be there in this parade with each of us, this year and every year.

Always remember,
Uncle Dennis

Memorial Day 2008

As we stand here looking at the flags upon these graves,
Know these flags represent but a few of the true American brave.

They fought for their country as man has through all of time,
Except that these soldiers lying here fought for your country and mine.

As we all are gathered here to pay them our respect,
Let's pass this word to others, it's what they would expect.

I'm sure that they would do it if it were me or you,
To show they did not die in vein, but for the red, white and blue.

Let's pass on to our children, and to those who never knew,
What these soldiers died for, it's the least we can do.

Let's not forget their families, great pain they had to bear,
Losing a son, father or husband, they need to know we still care.

No matter which war was fought, on the day that they died.
I stand here looking at these flags filled with American pride.

So as the bugler plays out Taps with its sweet and eerie sound,
Pray for these soldiers lying here in this sacred, hallowed ground.

Take home with you a sense of pride, you were here Memorial Day.
Celebrating the way Americans should on this solemnest of days.

Hi Son,

We miss you so much. I wish we could have had a cold one together to celebrate your birthday(February 9, 1980). I am sure you had a good one up there with your Grandpas.

The boys are growing like weeds. Lori said that Logan just figured out that she was older than you on your birthday. She says Tyler reminds her of you when she says something and he gives her one of your looks.

We miss you

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

November 28, 2006

This text was written by CPT Brittany Meeks regarding the memorial service in Iraq and I feel it paints a grand picture of the type of person Gregory McCoy was.
The Chapel was packed full of Soldiers and there was hardly any standing room remaining. The service began with a picture celebration of both Soldiers lives. The BN CDR gave his tribute, then the CO CDR, the PLT
Leader, SGT Johnson, and SSG McCoy and SGT Kennards SL. The speeches, while eloquent, were full of emotion, care, and truth. Everyone painted the picture of Greg as a professional, dedicated Soldier who was doing his job
because he loved it. Everyone pointed out his uncanny wit, wonderful smile, and dedication to duty in all he did. His love for leading Soldiers, being with Soldiers, and taking care of Soldiers was highlighted by everyone that spoke. They commented on how he made sure it was all dress right dress
and how he was always in the Motor Pool and always making sure his equipment was in the best shape. He was described as the guy that could make everyone laugh, even in the toughest times; he was described as the loving husband
and father who was sometimes as much a kid as his two boys. The program said that he was a Squad Leaders dream. His PL commented that Greg had told him that he was staying in the Army because of this war, because of leading Soldiers, and that his motto was Soldiers First, Mission Second. The PL closed his comments by painting a picture that he was sure that SSG McCoy and SGT Kennard had driven up to Heavens gates in a spotless, perfect
M1114, and that prior to entering the gates, SSG McCoy did one last check on SGT Kennard to make sure his robe was clean and tied right, his wings symmetrical, and his halo on straight. SGT Johnson spoke of SSG McCoy as the guy they could rely on to laugh, as a rock of a friend, and a talented
NCO. CPT Whitenberger, the CO CDR spoke of his reliability, of his
importance to the team, and expressed his deepest regrets to both Soldiers families. He ended his tribute with a touching letter that Gregs family sent. In the letter, the family described him as a son, brother, husband,
and father, and they too addressed how much he loved his family and loved his country and how proud they had been of him throughout the years. They encouraged all of the Soldiers that mourn with them in this great loss to continue the difficult work we do with the same vigor that Greg gave it. They expressed their pride in all Soldiers, and they told the Soldiers to drive on with the mission. Every leader that spoke did so with emotion welling from them. It was evident that SSG McCoy and SGT Kennard were greatly loved and respected by the entire 410th MP CO. Following the tributes, the Chaplain shared some
words and then the 1SG conducted the somber final roll call. A 21 gun salute, TAPs, and Amazing Grace on the Bag Pipes echoed throughout the Chapel as everyone stood at rigid attention, and then one by one, for the next two hours, friends, fellow Soldiers, and the US civilian police
officers that work with the 410th MP CO in training Iraqis, filed through to pay their last respects. The only sounds were those of the tears of friends
and the jingling of dog tags as many a fellow Soldier grasped the dog tags of their friend and brother for one last time.
The MP Corps, the 410th MP CO, and the Warmaster Veterans of OIF II lost a brother, a friend, and a leader. I am quite sure, however, that Gregs memory will live on throughout all of us who served with him. Pray for his
family, his wife Lori and their two sons Tyler and Logan. Pray for the Soldiers of the 410th MP CO as they regain the strength to complete the rest of their deployment with this double loss of their friends weighing heavy on their heart. Pray for each other, the Warmaster Veterans
that are spread throughout our Army, many deployed in harms way in Afghanistan and Iraq.

November 28, 2006

To the Family of Staff Sgt. Gregory W.G. McCoy:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. I do not know your husband/son or any of your family but I am forever indebted to you all. Your brave husband/son fought for my right to freedom and for my kids and grandkids. How selfish I am that I do not want my children to ever have to serve but how thankful I am that there are people like your husband/son who are willing to do it for people like me that he doesn't even know. There has to definitely be a very special place in Heaven for him and others that give their life for our country. God Bless you and your children. I pray that sometime in your life you feel that someone has done something for you as great as your husband/son has done for us. I am sorry for your loss, it breaks my heart. I pray for you and your beautiful children. My condolences and deepest sympathy. Thank You.

Dear Lori & Family,
You are in my Thoughts and Prayers at this most difficult of times. May The Lord watch over you, your sons and family, and bring you all the comfort you need. Know that we are proud of Greg and his sacrifice to our Country, and Thank you for your sacrifice as well. I recently read somewhere...The Soldier sacrifices his life for His Country, The Lord sacrificed His Life for Our Souls, I think Greg is with Jesus right now and they are both saying how proud they are of you. I haven't seen you in a very long time, however you are family and I love you. I still remember you as that little girl. I am proud of the woman you have become.

With Love,
Your Cousin Cindy (Ray)

Your husband is a Great Hero and has given the ultimate for our country, but you and your son's are also my heros, because of what you have given. He served our country overseas, you have served us here. You and your family are forever in my thoughts and prayers. Ms McCoy, I do not know you personally but I wanted to let you know my heart goes out to you. I lost my husband last year after a long hard battle with cancer, leaving me with a 2 year old. Life is tuff being a single parent, but my Faith and Trust in the Lord, my son and the wonderful friends and family support that I have, is what has helped me make it thru the tuff times.
So hold your head up high and know your husband is a HERO. And I thank you for allowing your husband to go and sacrifice his life so that I can have the freedom to be here in the Great United States of America and raise my son.
Because of your love and support of your husband and his willingness to serve, we are free today. SO again I thank you and I hope you can find comfort in knowing that I will be praying for you and your family.

Do not stand by my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am a diamond glint on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awake in the morning bush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight
I am the soft starshine at night
Do not stand by my grave and cry
I am not there... I did not die.

Being retired Air Force, (formally from Waco) it saddens our heart to see the loss of one of our own. Stand proud as we have a tribute to pay our beloved soldiers and family for the sacrifices they have made. Although we lose our loved one in battle, the family left behind somehow becomes the strongest in the situation and the proudest to say "he died doing what he wanted to do". Take care of your children and always make sure they know their daddy was a wonderful man and a hero. My heart aches for you and your sons.
