John Dunn Obituary

Dunn, John (Jack) Heaney

August 18, 1932 - December 22, 2023

Jack Dunn passed away on December 22, 2023, at the age of 91.

Jack was born in Brooklyn to Tim and Mary Dunn.  His earliest memory was at the age of 3 being placed on the front stoop with paper, pencils, and colors to entertain himself while everyone else cleaned their apartment.  Little did anyone realize this exercise would be the beginning of a lifelong passion for drawing and artwork.

Jack graduated from Power Memorial High School in Manhattan where he continued his illustrations in the school paper and yearbooks.

Upon graduation, Jack followed the family tradition and joined the US Army.  After his service, he worked at numerous freight companies around the US as a terminal manager for 26 years.  Along the way, Jack won Best of Breed for showing his Giant Schnauzer at the Westminster Dog Show in New York City.  He also took art classes with Ben Shute at The Georgia Institute of Art, got his undergraduate at SMU Dallas in art, and studied with internationally acclaimed watercolor artist, Jade Fon Woo in California.  Jack later received his Bachelor of Art from San Francisco State, Masters of Art from Texas Tech, and Texas Teaching Certificate at SMU in Dallas in Special Ed.  Jack taught art at several schools around Central Texas and used art to teach core subjects to special ed students at Waco ISD until his retirement.

In 1991, while living in Dallas, friends asked him to come to Waco to look for work and instead, found his soul mate and partner, Dale Black.  The two were married in 1993 and spent 30 wonderful years together.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Joe Dunn and Tim Dunn, and sister Jeanne Fischer.

Jack is survived by his loving wife, Dale Black-Dunn, sister, Sister Marie Dunn of New York, stepson Wes Black of Dallas, grandchildren Henry Black and Kate Black of Dallas, many great nieces and nephews, and lifelong friend, James Parker of California.

A special thank you to Wes Black, George Fischer, Angelica Garcia, Rachelle Watkins, and Linda Haskett for their loving support.

Through his love, his kindness, his dedication, his honesty, his humor, and his sharing of the world of visual arts, he greatly enhanced the lives of so many. I want to thank him for sharing his artistic knowledge and talent with the young actors at Linda Haskett´s Waco Children´s Theatre. He will be greatly missed.
