Dearest Family,

It’s hard to convey the depth of my sadness at Aunt Margaret’s passing. There are so many happy memories of times that the McDaniel, McCurry and Hale families spent together (!): Sundays at each other’s houses, camping trips (Tygart and East Harbor being the standouts), holiday picnics (usually in great parks) and holiday parties (in our homes).

My mental snapshots of Windsor Street include going to Sill School on Saturday afternoon to watch movies, playing with Terry & Mac’s electric train and the pump organ in the attic, reading comic books and skateboarding at Indian Hills Park. Remember the Easter we got the baby chicks at Six Corners? The house on South Park evokes memories of beautifully decorated Christmas trees (I subsequently bought rounded snowball ice tree lights like hers) and stockings filled with fruit and nuts. The tick of the schoolhouse clock from the coal yard hung in the dining room. As an adult, I remember feeding the ducks at the river bend with my children.

Aunt Margaret is at the heart of those memories. She was one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever known. She had an ease and a grace about her I’ve met in few others, with that easy-going drawl and that lovingly amused smile. When I think of her personally, I remember Sucrets tins of bobby pins (she looked great even with her hair in pin curls!), her green bean casserole (with the canned onion rings), her pecan pie, German chocolate cake and fried chicken (did I mention that she was a great cook?).

Her greatest testament and tribute is her family. They say that you don’t get to choose your family, but I would have chosen my McDaniel and Hale cousins anyway! I love and miss you all and the bigger half of my broken heart must be in Texas. I wish that I could physically be there with you, please know that I am holding you up in prayer and that I am there in spirit. Please hug each other for me?

Love to you always!

Cousin Nancy
