Thomas Babbitt Obituary

Thomas Babbitt

September 28, 1957 - September 29, 2023

Thomas Lee Babbitt, 66, died peacefully at his home in Azle, Texas, on Friday, September 29, 2023, after a long battle with cancer.

Thomas was born September 28, 1957, in Dallas, Texas, the firstborn child of Homer and Dorothy (McGrath) Babbitt. When Thomas was about age 12, his father purchased a farm in Fannin County where they started a small herd of Santa Gertrudis cattle. They visited this farm every weekend and Thomas grew to love the outdoors and dreamed of a life where he could be out by himself seeing the stars at night. He often commented that he was born about 100 years too late.

Thomas graduated from L V Berkner High School in Richardson, Texas as an honor student. He excelled in mathematics to the extent that his teacher arranged an interview with representatives from MIT University, who offered him a full scholarship to MIT. Thomas refused to accept this offer, stating that he wanted to raise cattle.

Following his graduation from high school, Thomas attended the University of Houston for two years and later attended Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas where he was enrolled in their hog production program. Thomas formed a partnership with his father and operated a successful farrow to finish hog operation in Crawford, Texas for several years until the packing plant in San Antonio closed, making the operation no longer feasible.

Thomas established a construction business, focusing on remodeling as well as new construction in high quality, larger homes in the DFW area, such as Westover Hills, Rivercrest, Mira Vista, etc. His talent and demand for critical levels of quality in his work earned him a reputation with builders such that they were willing to wait months for him to work on their construction projects. He later switched from wood construction to using steel and continued to do steel construction until 2022. Thomas was well respected, honest, hardworking and very detail oriented in everything he did.

Thomas loved to build furniture, hunt, and spend time with his family. He was an incredibly supportive and loving dad and the best Pawpaw that any child could possibly wish for. Thomas was a man of few words but made sure in the end that he had said everything that needed to be said to the ones he cared about.

Thomas was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Babbitt. He is survived by his father, Homer Babbitt of Weatherford; sister, Linda Babbitt of Weatherford; daughter, Kaitlyn (John) Bow of Azle; and grandchildren, Caleb, Easton, Corbin, Clara and Jackson Bow of Azle; as well as several cousins in Texas and Missouri.

Arrangements are pending.

Just found out about his passing & so sorry to hear this. Our families knew each other when I was growing up. When my mom was in the middle of a divorce (1980s) & trying to figure out the details of moving, Tom stopped by for a visit one day. He offered to move her in his hog trailer & did so by himself! He picked up heavy things I´d never seen a man lift, and refused payment. She moved to Bryan/College Station & he would stop by & check on her when he was in the area. She´d take him to lunch & talk his ear off. Being such a quiet & kind man, he just let her talk away. I´ve never forgotten his kindness & the incredible person he was. He was rare & wish we had more like him in this world.

A well admired, honest and a wizard. It´s been years but can never forget that face and the honesty in his eyes when discussing a problem at hand. My sincere condolences to his family, extended family and friends.
