Lucie Hangstefer Obituary

Lucie Simon Hainer Hangstefer, 90, of Dedham, formerly a resident of Lexington, she died of complications of Alzheimer's on October 16, 2011. Preceded in death by Raymond M. Hainer and second husband James B. Hangstefer. Mother of Peter, Margaret, and Jonathan Hainer. Stepmother of Jean Keller, James Hangstefer II, Mary DeNavarra. Grandmother of Sam, Raymond, and Gabriel. Lucie was born in Bad Godesburg, Germany on May 22, 1921 and immigrated to Canton, OH in 1929. She received a BA from the College of Wooster and an MA from Brown University; taught at the Mary C. Wheeler School, Boston University, and MassBay Community College; worked at the Harvard University Press, Houghton Mifflin, and OSTI, a consulting firm. In 1972, she and Jim founded the Winecellar of Silene in Waltham. Lucie wrote a well-known newsletter about wine and, after retirement, became a docent at the Harvard museums. She was an early feminist and active in progressive social issues; she had close friendships and was deeply loved. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 3 pm at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist, 23 Dedham Avenue, Needham MA, 02492.
